Cafu, 'il Pendolino' — the tireless full-back Italians named after a train

The Brazilian right-back Cafu earned in Italy during his Roma years (1997-2003) and carried to Milan his nickname 'il Pendolino' (the tilting express train), coined for the way he shuttled up and down the flank for ninety minutes without tiring. The Gazzetta admired a full-back who seemed to defend and attack in the same breath, a relentless 'fascia destra' (right wing) engine for Ancelotti's Milan. As one of football's most-capped and most-decorated defenders, Cafu embodied the Italian ideal of the modern overlapping 'terzino' (full-back).

Christian Abbiati, one-club loyalty in gloves

Christian Abbiati embodied Milanismo as few goalkeepers have, a dependable custodian who first emerged in the late 1990s and, after loan spells away, returned to give long and loyal service to the club he loved. Whether deputising in the trophy-laden seasons or reclaiming the number one shirt in the years after, his composure and devotion made him a fan favourite and eventually a club manager. A self-declared lifelong rossonero, Abbiati bridged the Zaccheroni, Ancelotti and Allegri eras with quiet reliability. Strictly, the loyalty began in 1998, when he arrived from Monza — eighteen years in red and black followed, interrupted only by loans to Juventus, Torino and Atlético Madrid.

Filippo Inzaghi, 'SuperPippo' — the ultimate opportunist

Italian tifosi and press turned Filippo Inzaghi into 'SuperPippo', borrowing the name of the bumbling-yet-heroic Italian cartoon character (the local Super Goof) for a striker who lived permanently on the last defender's shoulder. Sir Alex Ferguson's much-quoted verdict — that Inzaghi 'was born offside' — became a badge of honour in Italy. The Gazzetta celebrated his instinct as pure 'fiuto del gol' (a nose for goal), the poacher who scored ugly, decisive goals no elegant striker ever would.

La Grande Storia del Milan: the club's life on film

In the mid-2000s 'La Gazzetta dello Sport' issued 'La Grande Storia del Milan,' a multi-volume documentary series on home video that drew on the RAI archive to tell the rossonero saga from the beginning — its opening volume titled 'Da Kilpin al Gre-No-Li (1899-1958).' Weaving newsreel, radiocronache and match film across the eras, it stands as one of the fullest moving-image retrospectives of the club, a filmed companion to the printed histories. For collectors it remains a treasured vault of flickering black-and-white Milan.

Paolo Maldini's Bandiera Ethos, in His Own Words

Across authorised interviews and the family-club narrative he has shaped, Paolo Maldini articulated the meaning of being a one-club bandiera who wore the shirt his father Cesare had worn and captained. He spoke of Milan as an identity rather than an employer, describing loyalty across 25 seasons as a matter of belonging, not sentimentality. His reflections on the sides of the Sacchi-Capello dynasty — in which he starred as a young full-back behind captain Franco Baresi — and on captaining the Ancelotti era make him a rare living bridge across Milan's modern golden ages, a first-person thread linking the 1989 and 2007 European Cups.

Shevchenko, Scourge of the Derby della Madonnina

Across his Milan years, Andriy Shevchenko became the most prolific marksman in the history of the Derby della Madonnina, scoring 14 goals against Internazionale to stand as the fixture's all-time leading scorer. His relentless tormenting of the Nerazzurri made him a hero to the rossonero half of the city. Few players have ever owned a derby so completely.

The Lions' Den Closes: Fossa dei Leoni Dissolves

In 2005, after 37 years, the historic Fossa dei Leoni announced its own autoscioglimento — a self-dissolution — lamenting a curva world it felt had lost its way amid violence, commerce and repression. Italy's first ultras group folded its striscione for the last time, and the surviving Milan groups gradually coalesced under a single banner, 'Curva Sud Milano.' It closed an era begun in 1968 and marked a turning point in the identity of the rossonero support.

Shevchenko Strikes as Milan and Juve Duel for the 2005 Title

During the tense 2004-05 Serie A run-in, Carlo Ancelotti's Milan and Fabio Capello's Juventus went toe-to-toe at the summit, and their head-to-head meetings carried enormous weight. Andriy Shevchenko, the reigning Ballon d'Or holder, spearheaded a Milan attack that pushed Juventus all the way, though Turin ultimately took a Scudetto later stripped in the Calciopoli reckoning. The clashes typified the era when these two clubs contested nearly every Italian and European honour worth winning.

Crespo silences Old Trafford

In the first leg of the round of 16, Milan went to Old Trafford and delivered a masterclass in controlled away football. Hernan Crespo, on loan from Chelsea, pounced in the 78th minute when goalkeeper Tim Howard failed to hold on, prodding in the only goal of the night. Behind him a defence marshalled by Paolo Maldini — with Jaap Stam facing his former club — kept the young Wayne Rooney and Cristiano Ronaldo at arm's length.

Crespo repeats the dose at San Siro

A fortnight after Old Trafford, Hernan Crespo scored the only goal again as Milan beat Manchester United 1-0 in the return leg, completing a 2-0 aggregate in which Sir Alex Ferguson's side never found the net. Two legs, two identical scorelines, one scorer: the tie belonged to the Argentine and to a defence that refused to blink. The reward was a European quarter-final against Internazionale — a Champions League derby under the same roof.

The Flare Derby: Champions League Tie Abandoned

On 12 April 2005, as Milan led the Champions League quarter-final second leg and cruised toward the semi-finals, flares hurled from the Inter end rained onto the San Siro turf and one struck goalkeeper Dida on the shoulder, forcing German referee Markus Merk to abandon the Euroderby. UEFA awarded the tie to Milan, closed the stadium to Inter for their next European games and levied a heavy fine, and the rossoneri marched on toward the Istanbul final. The photograph of the smoke-wreathed Meazza became one of the era's ugliest images, a stark warning about the fury simmering on the terraces.

— MATCH SHEET — Coach: Carlo Ancelotti Scorers: Shevchenko (first half) — Milan led 1-0 on the night, 3-0 on aggregate After a disallowed Cambiasso goal, Inter fans rained flares onto the pitch, one striking Dida; the match was abandoned and UEFA awarded it 3-0 to Milan. Materazzi and Rui Costa standing together amid the smoke became one of football photography's iconic images.

Sheva and Tomasson down PSV at San Siro

In the semi-final first leg, Andriy Shevchenko put Milan ahead against Guus Hiddink's fearless young PSV Eindhoven, and Jon Dahl Tomasson added a late second for a 2-0 win. On the night it looked like comfort; days later, amid the storm of the return leg in Eindhoven, it proved to be salvation. Tomasson's goal became one of the fine margins that carried Milan to Istanbul.

Ambrosini's Away Goal: the 2005 PSV Semi-final Escape

Milan's 2005 European Cup run to Istanbul passed through a semi-final against PSV Eindhoven that became one of the most heart-stopping escapes in the club's European history. A 2-0 first-leg cushion built at San Siro on 26 April was nearly overturned in Eindhoven, where a furious PSV fightback swept Ancelotti's side to the brink — seconds from elimination. Then, in the 90th minute, Massimo Ambrosini rose to head home the away goal that settled it: PSV won the night 3-1, but Milan went through 3-3 on aggregate and onward to Istanbul. The tie also carried echoes of the club's long Dutch entanglement, reviving memories of Milan's historic duels with Ajax and the wider Dutch school that had given the Rossoneri Gullit, Rijkaard and Van Basten. Holland kept producing sides that pushed Milan to the edge, whether as opponents or as suppliers of their greatest players — a relationship with Dutch football that ran through both blood and battle.

Crespo's Brace and a 3-0 Interval

Milan's football in the first half was orchestral. Hernán Crespo swept home a second on 39 minutes after Shevchenko's cutback, then on 44 minutes ran onto a defence-splitting pass from Kaká and dinked an exquisite chip over the onrushing Dudek to make it 3-0. As the teams walked off at the break, the trophy seemed already engraved with the Rossoneri's name, and Forza Milan rang around a stadium that believed the contest was over.

Maldini's 50-Second Thunderbolt

Istanbul had barely settled when Andrea Pirlo swung a free-kick into the box and captain Paolo Maldini, arriving at the edge of the area, lashed a first-time volley low past Jerzy Dudek. The clock read under a minute, roughly fifty seconds, the fastest goal ever scored in a European Cup or Champions League final. For the great No. 3, playing in his fifth European Cup final, it seemed a moment of destiny that the night would go on to betray in the cruellest fashion.

2005 Champions League Final: Liverpool 3-3 Milan (3-2 pens) — the Miracle of Istanbul

2005 Champions League Final: Liverpool 3-3 Milan (3-2 pens) — the Miracle of Istanbul

On the night of 25 May 2005, beneath the floodlights of the Atatürk Olympic Stadium in Istanbul, Carlo Ancelotti's Milan produced a first half of imperious, symphonic beauty and a second half of unfathomable ruin. Leading 3-0 at the interval against Liverpool, the Rossoneri were dismantled in a delirious six-minute spell after the break, hauled back to 3-3, and finally beaten 3-2 on penalties. For the Milanisti it remains la notte più crudele, the cruellest night in the club's history, a European Cup that was won and then, impossibly, surrendered.

The Shootout: Dudek's Spaghetti Legs and Defeat

The final went to penalties, and Dudek, wobbling on his line in homage to Bruce Grobbelaar, turned tormentor. Serginho fired over the bar and Andrea Pirlo was saved; though Jon Dahl Tomasson and Kaká converted, it fell to Shevchenko to keep Milan alive, and his penalty too was saved. Liverpool had won the shootout 3-2. Ancelotti's fallen giants trudged from the Atatürk with a defeat that would take two years, and the redemption of Athens 2007, to avenge.

Dudek Denies Shevchenko in Extra Time

Extra time delivered the moment that would haunt Milan for years. Deep into the second period Serginho's cross found Andriy Shevchenko, whose point-blank header was somehow parried by Jerzy Dudek, and the follow-up, struck from barely a yard, was clawed away in an astonishing double save. It was the save that would come to define a European Cup final, and the Rossoneri's last, agonising chance to win the match in open play.

Six Minutes of Ruin: Pulled Back to 3-3

What followed defied belief. Steven Gerrard headed Liverpool back into the tie on 54 minutes; Vladimír Šmicer drilled in a second on 56; and on 60 minutes Xabi Alonso, having seen Dida parry his penalty, buried the rebound. In six devastating minutes a three-goal lead had evaporated to 3-3, and Milan, stunned and disbelieving, could not stem the tide that engulfed them.

2004-05: Istanbul — the six minutes that haunted a generation

A season that began with a 3-0 Supercoppa Italiana win over Lazio ended in the most infamous night in the club's history: leading Liverpool 3-0 at half-time in the Champions League final in Istanbul through Maldini and a Crespo double, Milan conceded three in six second-half minutes and lost the shoot-out. In Serie A the rossoneri finished runners-up behind Juventus, whose title was later revoked in the Calciopoli scandal. Ballon d'Or holder Andriy Shevchenko was again the team's leading league scorer.
