Adriano Galliani: the vice-president who ran the club for three decades

No account of the Berlusconi presidency is complete without Adriano Galliani, the vice-president and CEO whose deal-making powered the dynasty from behind the scenes for nearly thirty years. A telecommunications entrepreneur from Monza, Galliani orchestrated the arrivals of stars from Marco van Basten to Kaká and, as a power-broker within European football's governing bodies, helped shape the modern Champions League and the G-14. His partnership with Berlusconi was so central that the two men effectively functioned as a single institution atop the club.

Mauro Tassotti, the eternal vice-allenatore

When Mauro Tassotti retired in 1997 he simply moved a few metres, from the right-back berth to the coaching bench, becoming the most enduring vice-allenatore in Milan's history. For well over a decade he was the constant beside a procession of head coaches - most famously as Carlo Ancelotti's right-hand man through the Champions League triumphs of the mid-2000s - and he twice stepped in as caretaker. Loyal, understated and encyclopaedic in his reading of the game, Tassotti embodied the continuity that made Milanello feel like a family firm. He finally left in 2014, ending nearly two decades of unbroken service on the club's staff.

Andrea Pirlo, 'l'Architetto' — the regista reborn in front of the defence

Italians called Andrea Pirlo 'l'Architetto' (the Architect) and 'il Maestro' (the Master) for the way he designed matches from the deep-lying 'regista' role Carlo Ancelotti built for him at Milan. The Gazzetta wrote of a player who slowed time, seeing passes 'con la testa alzata' (with his head up) while chaos swirled around him. His serene, unhurried genius made 'regista davanti alla difesa' (playmaker in front of the defence) one of the defining Italian tactical phrases of the 2000s. Credit where due: the conversion was first attempted by Carlo Mazzone at Brescia in 2000-01; at Milan, Ancelotti made it permanent — 'He changed my career, putting me in front of the defence,' Pirlo said — and the Architetto built a decade of triumphs from that spot.

Shevchenko's 2004: top scorer, champion, Ballon d'Or

Four years on, Shevchenko topped Serie A again — 24 goals in 2003–04 — driving Carlo Ancelotti's Milan to the scudetto and completing a personal treble of sorts: capocannoniere, champion of Italy, and, that December, the Ballon d'Or. His volleyed finishes and ice-cold composure made him the deadliest striker in Europe. By the time he left in 2006 Shevchenko stood as Milan's second-highest scorer of all time, behind only the untouchable Nordahl.

The Mind Room

Within Milan Lab, sport psychologist Bruno Demichelis built a 'Mind Room' where players reclined in near-darkness wired to biofeedback sensors, learning to slow their breathing and heart rate and to master the mental storms of a decisive match. It was among football's earliest structured uses of mental-conditioning technology. When Carlo Ancelotti moved to Chelsea in 2009, he took Demichelis and the concept of the mind room with him to London.

Milan 4-1 Deportivo: the San Siro Blitz Before the Fall

The quarter-final first leg on 23 March 2004 looked like a masterclass that had settled the tie. Walter Pandiani stunned San Siro with an 11th-minute opener, but Milan answered with a devastating burst around the interval — Kaká on 45', Andriy Shevchenko a minute later, Kaká again on 50' and Andrea Pirlo on 53' — four goals in barely eight minutes to win 4-1. Ancelotti's champions left the field serene, the aggregate all but secured. What followed at the Riazor a fortnight later would turn this triumphant evening into the prologue of a catastrophe.

La Remontada del Riazor: Deportivo 4-0 Milan

Milan looked bound for another European Cup semi-final after dismantling Deportivo La Coruña 4-1 at San Siro on 23 March, Kaká scoring twice. But on 7 April 2004, Carlo Ancelotti's reigning European champions arrived in Galicia holding that 4-1 cushion — and suffered one of the most stunning collapses in the competition's history. Walter Pandiani struck after five minutes, Juan Carlos Valerón headed in just after the half hour, Albert Luque lashed into the top corner before the interval and Fran completed the rout on 76 minutes: Deportivo 4-0, a 5-4 aggregate that eliminated the holders. The Riazor erupted into the fiesta the Spanish press christened 'la remontada', while a shell-shocked Milan of Maldini, Nesta, Kaká and Shevchenko trudged off having conceded four without reply. The defence of the 2003 crown ended in disbelief — a rare, painful blemish on an otherwise triumphant season, and a scar Ancelotti's side carried for years. It endures as one of the Champions League's greatest comebacks.

The 17th Scudetto Secured

On 2 May 2004 Milan clinched their 17th league title — a first since 1999 — with a 1-0 win over Roma at a rapturous San Siro, Shevchenko converting from the penalty spot after a Kaká cross. Ancelotti's men were imperious throughout, finishing on 82 points from 25 wins and just two defeats, a commanding eleven points clear of the Giallorossi. After five long years the tricolore was stitched once more onto the rossonero shirt.

2003-04: The 17th Scudetto, powered by Kaká and Shevchenko

Milan won their 17th league title with 82 points, as the newly arrived Kaká dazzled in his debut season and Andriy Shevchenko claimed the capocannoniere crown with 24 goals. The campaign had opened with a 1-0 UEFA Super Cup win over Porto, though Boca Juniors took the Intercontinental Cup on penalties. The Champions League defence ended in a traumatic quarter-final collapse at Deportivo La Coruña, a 4-0 defeat at the Riazor after a 4-1 first-leg win.

2004 Supercoppa: Shevchenko's Hat-Trick Buries Lazio

As newly-crowned Serie A champions, Milan won the 2004 Supercoppa Italiana at San Siro, defeating Coppa Italia holders Lazio. It capped a magnificent stretch under Ancelotti in which the club collected honours on every front, and added the domestic super-cup to a swelling modern cabinet. The victory reaffirmed Milan's status as the reference point of Italian football in the mid-2000s.

Sheva on the Box: Milan Conquers the Video-Game Shelf

In October 2004, with Milan reigning champions of Italy, Andriy Shevchenko appeared on the global cover of EA Sports' FIFA Football 2005 alongside Patrick Vieira and Fernando Morientes — with Mexican goalkeeper Oswaldo Sánchez replacing Vieira on the North American edition. It put a Rossonero striker in millions of bedrooms worldwide in the very season he would collect the Ballon d'Or. Milan's video-game presence did not end there: Ronaldinho, who joined the club in July 2008, was still FIFA's cover face when FIFA 09 shipped that autumn alongside Wayne Rooney. Nearly two decades later, EA closed the circle by releasing a special 'Cover Star Icon' Shevchenko card in FIFA 23 Ultimate Team, restaging his 2005 box art for a new generation of gamers.

Shevchenko sinks Ronaldinho's Barcelona

Shevchenko sinks Ronaldinho's Barcelona

On a heavyweight group-stage night at San Siro, Ancelotti's Milan met Frank Rijkaard's resurgent Barcelona of Ronaldinho, Deco and Eto'o for command of Group F. Andriy Shevchenko struck the only goal of a taut, high-class contest, and the 1-0 win helped steer Milan to first place in the group. Nobody yet knew it, but the compass was already pointing towards Istanbul.

Andriy Shevchenko, 2004 Ballon d'Or

Andriy Shevchenko was voted 2004 European Footballer of the Year, the reigning Serie A top scorer whose goals had brought the Scudetto back to Milan. He followed the Dynamo Kyiv pair Oleg Blokhin and Igor Belanov as a Ballon d'Or winner who had risen through that same Kyiv academy. Cool, direct and lethal, Sheva was the modern heir to a lineage of great Eastern European forwards.

Shevchenko Crowned Ballon d'Or Winner

On 13 December 2004 Andriy Shevchenko was named European Footballer of the Year, becoming the fifth Milan player to lift the Ballon d'Or after Rivera, Gullit, Van Basten and Weah. The award crowned a stupendous run in which he had fired the Rossoneri to the scudetto as Serie A's capocannoniere with 24 goals. From the fields of Ukraine to the summit of world football, Sheva stood supreme — a true rossonero great.
