Sheva to Chelsea: Abramovich's British Record

In the summer of 2006 Milan reluctantly sold their talisman Andriy Shevchenko to Roman Abramovich's Chelsea for a reported British-record fee of around £30 million. The move, driven partly by the striker's wish to base his family in London, severed one of the club's great modern bonds. Unusually for Sheva it faltered: he struggled in England before returning, briefly, on loan to Milan in 2008.

A Template Copied Across Europe

Milan Lab's apparent success turned Milanello into a place of pilgrimage for sports scientists, and its integrated model of prevention, data and mental training was widely emulated as clubs across Europe built their own performance departments in the years that followed. Where football had once trusted the masseur's hands and the trainer's stopwatch, Milan helped usher in an age of biometrics and predictive analytics. The rossoneri, so often champions on the pitch, had quietly become innovators off it.

Docked, Not Relegated: Milan's Calciopoli Sentence

When the first-instance verdict and its appeals were finally exhausted, Milan escaped the relegation that condemned Juventus but not the punishment: some thirty points were stripped from its 2005-06 total, dropping the rossoneri to fourth and forcing them into the Champions League third qualifying round against Red Star Belgrade. The club then opened the 2006-07 campaign with an eight-point penalty shadowing every result. In one of football's cruellest ironies, that penalised, back-of-the-queue season ended with Milan lifting the European Cup in Athens.

Gennaro Gattuso, 'Ringhio' (the Growl) — the heart of Milan's engine room

Gennaro Gattuso, 'Ringhio' (the Growl) — the heart of Milan's engine room

The Italian press nicknamed Gennaro Gattuso 'Ringhio' (the Growl / Snarl) for the ferocious, dog-like intensity with which he hunted the ball across the midfield. The Gazzetta cast him as the tireless 'incontrista' (ball-winner) whose sweat made Pirlo's artistry possible — the perfect Italian pairing of graft and grace. Gattuso embraced the name, playing with a snarling passion that made him a tifosi favourite and, later, 'Ringhio' the coach.

John Foot's 'Calcio' brings Milan's story to the English-speaking world

The British historian John Foot publishes 'Calcio: A History of Italian Football', the first full scholarly history of the Italian game in English, and Milan is one of its great protagonists: Kilpin's founding, the 1908 split that created Inter, Rocco's catenaccio, the Rivera–Brera feud, Sacchi's pressing revolution and the entanglement of Berlusconi's club with Italian politics. Landing in the year of Calciopoli and Italy's World Cup win, the book gave a generation of foreign tifosi their map of rossonero history, and an Italian edition soon followed.

San Siro's Record Crowds: Milan and the 85,000 Cathedral

San Siro's Record Crowds: Milan and the 85,000 Cathedral

The Giuseppe Meazza stadium, redeveloped to a capacity above 85,000 for the 1990 World Cup, has hosted some of the largest attendances in Italian club football, with Milan's biggest matches and derbies routinely drawing crowds near the ground's ceiling. Great European nights and Derby della Madonnina fixtures produced the record gates, the sold-out San Siro becoming a byword for scale and noise in Italian football. Photographs of the packed three tiers, reproduced in the club's official histories and in Gazzetta's stadium features, capture the sheer magnitude of a full house at Milan's spiritual home.

Shevchenko: 175 goals, second only to Nordahl

By the time Andriy Shevchenko left for Chelsea in 2006, the Ukrainian had scored some 175 goals for Milan — second only to Gunnar Nordahl in the club's entire history. Sheva announced himself instantly, topping Serie A's scoring charts with 24 goals in his debut 1999–2000 season and leading the Champions League in his first European campaign. In 2004 he won the Ballon d'Or, the reward for a striker whose blend of raw pace and cold finishing made him the deadliest of Carlo Ancelotti's attackers.

bwin — the Ancelotti-era front

When Opel departed, the Austrian online-betting brand bwin took Milan's shirt front from 2006 to 2010, its lower-case wordmark defining the late Ancelotti years. It was the sponsor worn as Milan reclaimed the summit of Europe in 2007, and among the first gaming brands to headline a shirt of the club's stature. The deal marked Milan's move into the era of the global online sponsor.

The Camp Nou Semi-Final: Milan and Barcelona's Modern Enmity

The 2006 Champions League semi-final against Barcelona sharpened a modern rivalry between Milan's experienced core and Frank Rijkaard's ascendant Barça, decided by a single Ludovic Giuly goal that sent the Catalans towards the title Milan had craved. That Rijkaard, a Sacchi-era Milan hero, now masterminded the Rossoneri's elimination gave the tie a bitter irony. Barcelona and Milan had become recurring gatekeepers to each other's ambitions, two clubs whose fortunes seemed forever intertwined at the semi-final stage. The Camp Nou defeat lingered as one of the great what-ifs of the Ancelotti era.

Calciopoli: The Wiretaps That Engulfed Italian Football

In May 2006 the transcripts of intercepted telephone calls — many involving Juventus general manager Luciano Moggi and the men who assigned referees — spilled into the Italian press and plunged the game into its gravest scandal in a generation. Milan was named among the five clubs referred to the sporting tribunals, its case turning on the contacts of team official Leonardo Meani with match officials, while Adriano Galliani stepped down from his post at the head of the Lega Calcio. Christened Calciopoli, the affair unfolded across front pages and courtrooms through a long, feverish summer, forcing Italian football to confront the corruption of its own machinery.

2005-06: Second on the pitch, punished by Calciopoli

Milan finished second on the field behind Juventus with 88 points, but the Calciopoli verdicts docked the club 30 points retroactively, dropping them to third in the adjusted classification and imposing a further penalty for the following season. In Europe the run ended at the semi-final stage against Barcelona, a tie remembered for Shevchenko's controversially disallowed goal. It proved Shevchenko's farewell campaign — 19 league goals before his summer sale to Chelsea.

Kaka decides Brazil's opener at his peak

On 13 June 2006, in Brazil's World Cup opener against Croatia, it was a Milan man who settled it: Kaka collected the ball outside the area, shifted onto his left and curled a low drive inside the post for a 1-0 win. Reigning at the peak of his powers in the rossoneri No. 22, the Brazilian was among the finest players of Germany 2006 until the holders' quarter-final exit to France. A year on he would drag Milan to Champions League glory as the world's best, crowned Ballon d'Or.

Gilardino's Header: Milan on Milan Against the USA

In the fractious group-stage 1-1 with the United States at Kaiserslautern on 17 June 2006 — a bruising night of three red cards — Milan striker Alberto Gilardino headed Italy in front in the 22nd minute, meeting a delivery from his rossonero teammate Andrea Pirlo. Cristian Zaccardo's own goal five minutes later dragged the score level, but the Gilardino–Pirlo combination had briefly turned a savage evening blue. It stood as Gilardino's imprint on Italy's march to the title.

Nesta's Cruel Exit — and the Man Who Replaced Him

Alessandro Nesta, Milan's imperious centre-back, started Italy's opening matches before a groin injury against the Czech Republic on 22 June 2006 ended his World Cup. Fate turned cruel and kind at once: the man who came on for him that night, Marco Materazzi, both scored and would later author the final's decisive drama, while fellow rossonero Filippo Inzaghi lifted a late second to seal the 2-0 win over the Czechs. Nesta watched the coronation from the sidelines — a world champion in medal, felled on one of football's great unlucky nights.

Milan's Six and Italy's Fourth Star

When Italy lifted the World Cup in Berlin on 9 July 2006, a Milan contingent stood at the heart of Marcello Lippi's squad: Alessandro Nesta, Andrea Pirlo, Gennaro Gattuso, Filippo Inzaghi, Massimo Ambrosini and Alberto Gilardino were all in the 23. La quarta stella (the fourth star) was sewn on amid extraordinary domestic turmoil, for Calciopoli had erupted back home only weeks earlier and Milan, along with the other implicated clubs, faced tribunals and points penalties even as its players conquered Germany. Rarely has a national triumph been so bound to one dressing room, nor achieved against so surreal a backdrop of scandal at home.

Pirlo's Coronation: The Regista of Germany 2006

Andrea Pirlo opened his tournament by curling home Italy's first goal of the finals against Ghana in Hannover, then dictated from deep game after game as the metronomo (metronome) of Lippi's midfield. In the semifinal against the hosts in Dortmund, his patient wriggle and slipped pass unlocked Germany for Fabio Grosso's 119th-minute winner. Across the month the Milan playmaker gathered a string of man-of-the-match honours, his San Siro vision transplanted whole to the Nazionale and left only Zinédine Zidane ahead of him in the reckoning for the Golden Ball.

Ringhio at the Summit of the World

Ringhio at the Summit of the World

Gennaro Gattuso — Ringhio, 'the growler' — was the lung and the snarl of Italy's midfield in Germany, screening the back four and hounding every attack so that Pirlo could conduct in peace. The Milan pairing that Carlo Ancelotti had built at San Siro, all steel and silk, became the beating heart of Lippi's Nazionale. Through the marathon nights against Germany and France, Gattuso's relentless industry across 120 minutes helped hold the door shut until the shootout delivered the trophy.

Berlin, 9 July 2006: Pirlo's Corner and the Ice-Cold Penalty

In the Olympiastadion final against France it was Pirlo's inswinging corner that Marco Materazzi rose to head home, cancelling Zidane's early penalty and levelling the match at 1-1. Named man of the match, Pirlo then stepped up first in the shootout and buried his spot-kick con ghiaccio nelle vene (ice in the veins) as Italy prevailed 5-3. Gattuso covered every blade of grass through 120 minutes alongside him, two Milan men on the pitch as la Nazionale was crowned campione del mondo.

Back among the qualifiers: Red Star held off

Stripped of points and pride by the Calciopoli scandal, Milan were readmitted to Europe only days before being thrown into the third qualifying round — unfamiliar territory for the aristocrats of the competition. On an August night at San Siro, Carlo Ancelotti's side laboured to a narrow 1-0 first-leg win over Crvena Zvezda of Belgrade, a slender advantage that scarcely hinted at the golden campaign to follow.
