The Emperor's Brief Reign: Fatih Terim

In the summer of 2001 Berlusconi handed the bench to Fatih Terim, the charismatic Turk known as the Emperor, who had led Galatasaray to the 2000 UEFA Cup and dazzled Italy at Fiorentina. Reunited with Rui Costa and armed with a lavishly rebuilt squad that included Inzaghi and the young Pirlo, his Milan played bright, unbuttoned football but leaked points, and by November the experiment was over. His dismissal opened the door to Carlo Ancelotti — and, unknowingly, to the club's next golden age.

Zaccheroni's Fall and the End of the Transition

The centenary magic faded quickly: after a disappointing 1999-2000 and a faltering 2000-01, Alberto Zaccheroni was dismissed, and Milan limped home in sixth with Cesare Maldini and Mauro Tassotti steadying the ship on an interim basis. The club stood between eras -- its scudetto glory already a memory, its next dynasty not yet born. Stability, and Carlo Ancelotti, lay just over the horizon.

Pirlo Crosses the Naviglio: Inter's Gift to Milan

In 2001 Milan signed a 22-year-old Andrea Pirlo from city rivals Internazionale for a modest fee — a player Inter had shuffled out on loan to Reggina and Brescia, unsure where a surplus attacking midfielder fit. Carlo Ancelotti's masterstroke was to drop him from trequartista into a deep-lying playmaker pulling the strings in front of the back line: the regista. Paired beside Gennaro Gattuso's fury, Pirlo became a metronome whose passing would orchestrate a generation of Rossoneri triumphs, and Italian football was never the same. In his memoir Penso quindi gioco (I Think Therefore I Play), Pirlo called that reinvention the making of him; it remains one of the most consequential tactical redeployments in the club's history.

Rui Costa: The Club-Record Maestro

In the summer of 2001 Milan broke their transfer record to bring the Portuguese fantasista Manuel Rui Costa from a financially stricken Fiorentina for some 85 billion lire, around 43 million euros. 'Il Maestro' was the era's great No. 10, an elegant creator for the rossoneri. His arrival, alongside the young Kaka two years later, would soon force Ancelotti's famous rethink and a delicate rivalry of playmakers that reshaped the side.

King George Weah, the World Cup that never came

George Weah, the only African ever to win the Ballon d'Or, earned in 1995 in Milan's red and black, is also the greatest player never to grace a World Cup. He poured his own fortune into Liberia's Lone Star, paying for kit, flights and bonuses, yet the tiny nation fell agonisingly short of France '98 and, on the final matchday of qualifying, of Korea/Japan 2002. That the sublime King George never walked out at a World Cup is among the game's most poignant absences, and a uniquely Milanese heartbreak.

Milan Channel — the club becomes a broadcaster

At the turn of the millennium Milan launched Milan Channel, among the first dedicated club television stations in Italy, carrying training-ground footage, classic matches and rolling rossonero news to subscribers around the clock. It was the logical extension of Berlusconi's founding insight that Milan was as much a media property as a football team, converting supporters into an audience for the club's own storytelling. Later rebranded Milan TV, the channel made the club's own cameras, rather than the neutral broadcasters, the primary lens on daily life at Milanello.

Zvonimir Boban on Milan, Identity and Intellect

Zvonimir Boban, later a columnist and cultural voice as much as a footballer, reflected in interviews and essays on a Milan dressing room he experienced as unusually intellectual and cosmopolitan. He recounted arriving amid the Capello dynasty and finding a club where a player was expected to think, read the game, and carry himself with dignity off the pitch. Boban framed his Milan years as formative to the philosophy-minded administrator he would become, a rare footballer who quoted Dostoevsky as readily as he discussed a back four.

Back in the UEFA Cup: Terim starts, Ancelotti inherits

Milan returned to the UEFA Cup in 2001-02, opening under Fatih Terim with victory over BATE Borisov of Belarus. By early November the Turk was gone, dismissed with the league campaign stuttering, and Carlo Ancelotti stepped in — inheriting both the squad and a European run he would carry deep into spring. The unglamorous Thursday competition thus became the quiet first chapter of the Ancelotti era.

Inter 0-6 Milan: The Record Rout

On 11 May 2001, in a Serie A season both Milanese clubs would rather forget, the Rossoneri produced the most emphatic derby performance in the fixture's history, thrashing Inter 6-0 at San Siro. Gianni Comandini, who would score only twice in his entire Milan career, headed and struck both goals inside the opening 18 minutes, with Serginho tormenting the Nerazzurri for three assists and a goal of his own, before Federico Giunti's free-kick and an Andriy Shevchenko brace completed the humiliation. It remains Milan's greatest winning margin over their neighbours, a date no Interista can forget.

Serie A 2000-01

2000-01: Sixth place, a 6-0 derby and the end of Zaccheroni

A disjointed campaign ended with Milan sixth in Serie A after Alberto Zaccheroni was dismissed in March and club legend Cesare Maldini, assisted by Mauro Tassotti, took caretaker charge. Maldini's brief reign delivered the unforgettable 6-0 demolition of Inter in the Derby della Madonnina of 11 May 2001. Andriy Shevchenko again led the scoring with 24 league goals, but Milan fell out of the Champions League at the second group stage and had to settle for a UEFA Cup place.
