'Superpippo' Inzaghi — a nickname from the cartoons

Filippo Inzaghi, the poacher who seemed to live on the last defender's shoulder, was crowned 'Superpippo' after the Italian name for Disney's Super Goof — half tease, half awe at a striker forever materialising where the ball dropped. The nickname captured a very Italian affection for the furbo (cunning) opportunist over the pure stylist. Across the 2000s at Milan he made the cartoon a decade-long reality of decisive rossonero goals.

L'albero di Natale: the Christmas tree and Pirlo the regista

Carlo Ancelotti solved a squad overloaded with playmakers with an act of positional alchemy that became Milan's signature of the 2000s. Arriving in 2001 as a crowded-out trequartista, the young Andrea Pirlo — a stalling attacking midfielder — was recast by Ancelotti and Mauro Tassotti as a deep-lying regista just ahead of the back four, where, shielded by Gennaro Gattuso's ferocious tackling, he could spray the passes that dictated matches. Around him Ancelotti devised the 'albero di Natale', the Christmas-tree 4-3-2-1 in which two trequartisti, Rui Costa and Clarence Seedorf, supported a lone striker, letting the coach field his most gifted creators at once. The shape carried Milan to the 2003 Champions League, won on penalties against Juventus at Old Trafford. Pirlo's metronomic passing became the template for Italy's midfield — alongside Alessandro Nesta and Massimo Ambrosini, Milan became the laboratory of the Azzurri's spine — and the blueprint drawn on the Milanello training pitches shaped Italian football for a decade, making Pirlo's reinvention one of the most influential tactical strokes of the era.

Milan Lab: Science Enters the Rossoneri

The Berlusconi era gave Milanello its most famous scientific innovation: Milan Lab, a high-tech research centre embedded in the training ground to predict injuries through data before they happened. At its heart was Jean-Pierre Meersseman, a Belgian chiropractor with an unorthodox, holistic method who came to embody the Lab's quiet genius. He treated the footballer as an integrated system in which a misaligned jaw or an intolerant gut could betray a hamstring, and — working alongside sport scientist Bruno Demichelis — he turned Milanello into a place where data and intuition met. Thousands of measurements per player fed predictive models that slashed injury days, winning over sceptical professionals by keeping them on the pitch far longer than nature seemed to allow. The Lab became the envy of world football, with clubs making pilgrimages to Carnago to study it; its most visible monument was longevity, with Paolo Maldini and Alessandro Costacurta both playing top-level football past their fortieth birthdays.

Ending Hapoel Tel Aviv's fairy tale

Milan's UEFA Cup quarter-final in March 2002 pitted them against the tournament's great romance: Hapoel Tel Aviv, who had already eliminated Chelsea, Lokomotiv Moscow and Parma in a run followed breathlessly across Israel. Over two legs Ancelotti's side ended the adventure and moved into the last four. It was Milan's deepest run in the competition — and, respectfully, the end of one of the UEFA Cup's most improbable stories.

Dortmund close the road to Rotterdam

The semi-final against Matthias Sammer's Borussia Dortmund ended the run: a heavy first-leg defeat at the Westfalenstadion left Milan too much to do, and a spirited win in the San Siro return could not repair the aggregate. Dortmund went on to Rotterdam and lost the final 3-2 to Feyenoord, Pierre van Hooijdonk striking twice in De Kuip. Milan's consolation was larger than it seemed — within a year Ancelotti's side would be champions of Europe.

2001-02: Ancelotti arrives and rebuilds

Fatih Terim's experiment lasted only until November, when Carlo Ancelotti was appointed and quietly began constructing one of the great Milan sides. The rossoneri climbed to fourth place in Serie A, reclaiming a Champions League berth, while in Europe they reached the UEFA Cup semi-finals before falling to Borussia Dortmund, who went on to lose the final to Feyenoord. New signing Filippo Inzaghi and Andriy Shevchenko shared the attacking burden in a season of transition that laid the foundations for the triumphs to come.

Maldini's bitter Azzurri farewell

Paolo Maldini's fourth World Cup ended in bitterness on 18 June 2002, when Ahn Jung-hwan's golden goal knocked Italy out against co-hosts South Korea in Daejeon. It was the captain's final cap, the last of 126; across 1990, 1994, 1998 and 2002 the greatest defender of his generation never once lifted the trophy his talent deserved, the 1994 final in Pasadena his closest, cruellest brush. That a Milan man of such completeness retired from the Azzurri empty-handed remains one of football's quiet injustices.

Cafu lifts the World Cup, then joins Milan

In Yokohama on 30 June 2002, Cafu became the first footballer to appear in three consecutive World Cup finals, lifting the trophy as Brazil's captain after the 2-0 defeat of Germany. Il Pendolino, the metronome who patrolled the right flank tirelessly, joined Milan the following year and added a Champions League to his honours in 2007. The archive treasures him as living proof of Milan's magnetism for World Cup royalty at its very peak.

Through the side door: Slovan Liberec edged at San Siro

Having finished only fourth in Serie A, Milan had to enter Europe through the third qualifying round, and the road to Old Trafford began almost apologetically against the Czech champions Slovan Liberec. At San Siro, Carlo Ancelotti's remodelled side — with Rivaldo newly arrived and a rejuvenated attack — laboured to a 1-0 first-leg win. Nobody watching imagined they were seeing the opening step of a campaign that would end with a sixth European Cup.

Escape on the Neisse: through on away goals in Liberec

In the tight little Stadion u Nisy, Slovan Liberec won the return leg 2-1 and for long minutes the future champions of Europe stood on the edge of elimination before the group stage had even begun. Milan's single away goal proved the difference: 2-2 on aggregate, and the rossoneri crept through on the away-goals rule. It remains the great forgotten fright of the 2002-03 triumph — the night the Champions League campaign nearly died in Bohemia.

Deadline-Day Coup: Nesta Joins from Lazio

On the final day of the summer 2002 window, Milan seized on Lazio's financial collapse to sign Alessandro Nesta, the finest Italian centre-back of his generation, for a fee in the region of €30 million. Paired first with Maldini and later with Thiago Silva, Nesta gave Milan a decade of defending so elegant it read like inheritance — two Champions Leagues, two scudetti, and a place among the club's greatest ever defenders. He bowed out with the veterans' mass farewell of 13 May 2012.

Group G opens: Lens beaten at San Siro

Drawn into a first group stage with Bayern Munich, Deportivo La Coruna and RC Lens, Milan opened at San Siro with a 2-1 win over the French side. It was a workmanlike rather than dazzling start, but it set in motion a run of four straight victories that would settle qualification with two matchdays to spare.

Riazor rout: Inzaghi treble sinks Deportivo 4-0

At the Riazor, against Javier Irureta's feared 'Super Depor', Milan produced the statement performance of the autumn: a 4-0 demolition on Spanish soil, with Filippo Inzaghi helping himself to a hat-trick. The result announced Ancelotti's side as genuine contenders and stood as one of the heaviest European defeats ever inflicted on Deportivo at home. Two seasons later the same stadium would take its revenge, but on this night the Riazor belonged entirely to Pippo.

Bayern beaten at San Siro

The heavyweight fixture of Group G went Milan's way at San Siro, Ottmar Hitzfeld's Bayern Munich beaten 2-1. It was half of a home-and-away double over the Germans that defined the group: Bayern, finalists in 1999 and champions in 2001, would finish bottom with just two points — one of the great humiliations in the club's European history — while Milan marched on.

Doubling up in Munich

In the vast bowl of the Olympiastadion, Milan completed the double over Bayern Munich with a 2-1 away win — a victory of maturity and control against Kahn, Ballack and company. Beating the Bavarians twice in a single group stage was the clearest sign yet that Ancelotti had built something serious: qualification for the second group stage was effectively secured in Germany.
