Fernando Redondo's Cruel Milan Destiny

In the summer of 2000 Milan signed Fernando Redondo, the imperious Argentine playmaker fresh from conquering Europe with Real Madrid, his backheel at Old Trafford that spring already part of football folklore. Within weeks, before he could make a competitive appearance, his knee gave way in training at Milanello. Redondo asked the club to suspend his salary until he was fit to play — a gesture that became legend across football — and more than two years passed before he finally wore the shirt in earnest, managing only a handful of appearances before retiring in 2004.

January 2000

King George Departs for Chelsea

In January 2000, with Zaccheroni's attack now built around Shevchenko and Bierhoff, George Weah accepted a loan to Gianluca Vialli's Chelsea, ending four and a half seasons in rossonero. The 1995 Ballon d'Or winner — still the only African so crowned, and crowned as a Milan player — left with two scudetti and a catalogue of goals crowned by the coast-to-coast against Verona. In London he scored on his debut against Tottenham and lifted the FA Cup that May, a regal postscript to his San Siro reign.

1999–2000 season

Shevchenko's Debut-Season Capocannoniere

Andriy Shevchenko announced himself in Italy the moment he arrived. Bought from Dynamo Kyiv in 1999 for a then-record fee, the Ukrainian struck 24 league goals in 1999–2000 to win the capocannoniere in his very first Serie A season — a feat only a handful of foreigners, Nordahl among them, had ever managed on debut. 'Sheva' finished third in that year's Ballon d'Or, the first sign that Milan had found a number seven to rank with the club's greatest.

Sandro Tonali Is Born

Sandro Tonali was born on 8 May 2000 in Lodi, Lombardy, a lifelong Milan supporter who grew up idolising Gennaro Gattuso and wearing the number 8 in his honour. After breaking through at Brescia, he joined his boyhood club in 2020 and became the beating heart of the midfield, his tenacity and vision central to the 2021-22 title triumph before a club-record sale took him to Newcastle United in 2023. His boyhood-dream story — the tattooed local boy lifting the Scudetto for the team he loved — made his departure one of the most emotional of the modern era.

1999-2000: Shevchenko announces himself

Andriy Shevchenko arrived from Dynamo Kyiv and won the capocannoniere crown with 24 goals in his debut Serie A season, instantly becoming the new idol of the Curva Sud. Zaccheroni's champions could not repeat, finishing third as Lazio took the title, and the return to the Champions League was a flop — bottom of a first group stage containing Chelsea, Hertha Berlin and eventual UEFA Cup winners Galatasaray. Still, in Sheva Milan had found the striker who would define the decade ahead.
