Andriy Shevchenko Arrives from Kyiv

Andriy Shevchenko Arrives from Kyiv

In 1999 Milan paid Dynamo Kyiv a fee of around a then-record $25 million for Andriy Shevchenko, the deadly Ukrainian who had terrorised Europe under Valeriy Lobanovskyi. He repaid them instantly, ending his debut 1999-2000 season as Serie A's capocannoniere (top scorer) with 24 goals. Over seven years 'Sheva' became the club's second-highest scorer of all time behind Nordahl and, in 2004, a Ballon d'Or winner.

Ringhio arrives: Gattuso signs from Salernitana

Fresh from Salernitana's relegation, a 21-year-old Gennaro Gattuso arrived at Milanello in the summer of 1999 — a snarling Calabrian midfielder who had taken an unusual road through Glasgow, where Rangers supporters had adored the teenager Walter Smith signed from Perugia in 1997. Zaccheroni's reigning champions added him in the same window as Andriy Shevchenko, pairing the sublime with the ferocious. Nobody guessed the tackler nicknamed 'Ringhio' — the growl — would still be biting into challenges thirteen seasons later.

Football as Content: Milan Channel and the Fininvest Model

Berlusconi grasped earlier than almost anyone that a football club was a content machine for a television empire. In 1999 Milan launched Milan Channel, one of Italy's first dedicated club broadcasters, feeding his Mediaset ecosystem while the club leaned on Fininvest's marketing muscle for sponsorship and global reach. Tellingly, where Juventus, Lazio and Roma all floated on the Milan stock exchange around the turn of the century, AC Milan stayed wholly private within Fininvest - a personal fiefdom rather than a public company, for better and for worse.

Gianni Brera and the Literary Milan

No Italian writer shaped how the game's story is told more than Gianni Brera, the Lombard journalist who elevated football writing into literature. It was Brera who popularised much of the vocabulary later histories borrowed — coining the nickname l'Abatino (the little abbot) for Gianni Rivera and theorising an Italian defensive art built on catenaccio (literally 'door-bolt', a defensive system) and the contropiede (counter-attack). Narrative histories of the club lean heavily on his Guerin Sportivo and Gazzetta columns, so that even a museum's account is partly filtered through Brera's baroque, opinionated Italian.

Kilpin's Lost Grave Rediscovered and Honoured

For decades Herbert Kilpin's resting place was unknown, until dedicated researchers and Milan enthusiasts devoted to the founder's memory — above all the amateur historian Luigi La Rocca — set out to trace what had become of him. Through patient detective work in cemetery and civil records during the 1990s, La Rocca located the forgotten grave, hidden in the Protestant quarter of Milan's Cimitero Maggiore with no name to mark it. The rediscovery turned a forgotten name into a cause, setting in motion the campaign to give Kilpin the honoured resting place he had never received: in 1999, as the club celebrated its centenary, Milan funded a fitting new tomb and had the founder's remains translated to the prestigious Cimitero Monumentale. After more than eighty years of silence, the man who created AC Milan was restored to honour in the city he had made his own, reconnecting the modern club with the Englishman at its origin.

Magliarossonera.it — The Fan Archive as Memory Bank

The deep fan-archive magliarossonera.it (from maglia rossonera, 'the red-and-black shirt') has become an unofficial encyclopaedia of Milan's minutiae — cataloguing kits, crest variations, line-ups, transfers and forgotten friendlies across the club's history. Where official volumes offer the grand narrative, this Italian labour of love preserves the granular data that even the club sometimes lost: obscure early squad lists, wartime campionato di guerra (war-championship) fixtures, minor tournaments and the evolution of the diavolo (devil) badge. It is a reference researchers quietly rely on for precision no glossy book supplies.

Milan 100: The Centenary Volumes

For the club's centenary in 1999, Milan produced lavish celebratory volumes gathering a hundred years of images, statistics and testimony into a single archival monument. These books fixed the canonical timeline of the rossoneri (the red-and-blacks), from the December 1899 founding of the Milan Foot-Ball and Cricket Club to the sides of the late 1990s, and gave Italian fans a definitive reference for players, presidents and trophies. As museum objects they matter because they crystallised what the club itself chose to remember and how it wished its own story told.

1999 centenary research

Preserving the Kilpin Origin Story

Italian centenary and archival works did crucial work in recovering Herbert Kilpin from near-oblivion, restoring the Nottingham-born founder to the centre of the Milan Foot-Ball and Cricket Club story. Their research popularised the lore around him — his account of the red for the players' ardour and black for the fear struck into opponents, and the image of a leader who kept a bottle of whisky by the pitch. Because Kilpin died in 1916 and lay in an unmarked grave for decades, it was largely Italian fan-history and centenary attention that revived interest in him, culminating in his 1999 reburial with honours in the Cimitero Monumentale of Milan.

The Centenary Roll of the Scudetti and Stars

The 1999 centenary publications formalised Milan's honours record for Italian fans — the tally of scudetti (Serie A league titles, marked by the shield worn on the chest), the stella (the gold star awarded for reaching ten league titles, which Milan attained in 1979), and the European totals that made the club a Continental giant. By laying out these honours season by season, the books turned scattered results into a coherent hierarchy of glory that supporters could recite. This canonisation of the numbers is itself a historical act, defining which achievements the institution places at the heart of its identity.

Shevchenko announces himself in the derby

Andriy Shevchenko needed only his first Derby della Madonnina to win over the Curva Sud, striking twice against Inter in his debut 1999-2000 season. Quick, ruthless and lethal on his left foot, he would go on to become one of the most prolific marksmen in the fixture's long history, his goals against the nerazzurri as reliable as sunrise. For a generation of Milanisti, Sheva bearing down on the Inter goal became one of the derby's defining images.

Perugia 1999: the Centenary Scudetto on the Final Day

On 23 May 1999, in the club's centenary year, Alberto Zaccheroni's unfancied Milan clinched the 16th Scudetto on the season's last day at a rain-soaked Stadio Renato Curi in Perugia. Andrés Guglielminpietro struck on 11 minutes and Oliver Bierhoff on 31 to put the Rossoneri two up, before Hidetoshi Nakata's 34th-minute penalty forced a tense finale held together by a young Christian Abbiati's saves in a 2-1 win — Perugia never led. Riding a devastating late run of seven straight wins, Milan overhauled Sven-Göran Eriksson's Lazio down the stretch to finish a single point clear — a title few had predicted when 'Zac' arrived from Udinese with his 3-4-3 and a squad written off as also-rans. A season that began in doubt ended in glorious catharsis.

1998-99: The centenary scudetto

In the club's centenary year, Alberto Zaccheroni's 3-4-3 produced one of the most improbable titles in Milan history: written off in autumn, the rossoneri won their final seven matches to overhaul Lazio's seven-point lead and clinch the 16th scudetto with a 2-1 win at Perugia on the last day. Oliver Bierhoff, brought from Udinese with his coach, led the scoring with around 20 league goals. From 10th to champions in a single season — the perfect birthday gift for a club founded in December 1899.

Supercoppa Italiana 1999: Milan 1-2 Parma

Zaccheroni's newly crowned centenary champions hosted Alberto Malesani's Parma, a side arriving off a golden spring of UEFA Cup and Coppa Italia glory. The ducali won 2-1 at San Siro, taking the Supercoppa north along the Via Emilia and leaving Milan's scudetto celebrations with a sour coda.

Milan Channel: Italy's first club television station

In the month the club turned one hundred, Milan launched Milan Channel, the first thematic channel in Italy devoted entirely to a single football club. Subscribers could now live inside the rossonero bubble around the clock — Milanello training sessions, archive matches from the Rocco and Sacchi eras, transfer-deadline vigils narrated by house voices. It was the logical endpoint of the Berlusconi era's marriage of football and television, and the template every big Italian club would eventually copy.

The centenary in print: Milan's official hundred-year literature

As the club turns one hundred on 16 December 1999, its story is fixed on paper as never before: official centenary volumes, photographic histories and Gazzetta dello Sport commemorative supplements trace the arc from Herbert Kilpin's founding circle of 1899 to the sixteenth scudetto won months earlier under Zaccheroni. This wave of centenary publishing became the backbone of the club's own museum-and-archive culture, the canonical reference shelf from which later Milan histories draw their dates and their photographs.

Centenario Rossonero: Milan Turns One Hundred

One hundred years to the day after Herbert Kilpin and his fellow pioneers called the Milan Foot-Ball and Cricket Club into life, the rossoneri marked their centenary on 16 December 1999. The birthday season wore its history proudly: a commemorative centenary emblem appeared on the 1999-2000 shirts, while books and press supplements retraced the century from Kilpin's Nottingham origins to the European pantheon. Fittingly, the league title won the previous May under Alberto Zaccheroni had already entered club lore as the scudetto of the centenary.

Milan Channel: a club's own channel on its 100th birthday

On 16 December 1999 — a century to the day after the club's foundation — Milan launched Milan Channel, among the first thematic television channels in Italy dedicated entirely to a football club. Rebranded Milan TV, it handed the club command of its own moving-image archive, from training-ground films to matchday retrospectives, so that the rossoneri could at last narrate themselves.
