Zaccheroni Arrives with His 3-4-3

Alberto Zaccheroni arrived in 1998 carrying his signature 3-4-3, an audacious attacking system he had honed at Udinese, and imposed it wholesale on Milan by bringing the prolific Oliver Bierhoff with him. Against the grain of Italian caution, Zac fielded three forwards and trusted a three-man defence to hold, and the gamble delivered the 1998-99 scudetto in the club's centenary year. The system demanded specific interpreters and courage, making Zaccheroni one of Serie A's most distinctive tactical thinkers of the era.

Summer 1998

Oliver Bierhoff Brings His Aerial Threat

Following his coach Alberto Zaccheroni from Udinese, the towering German striker Oliver Bierhoff arrived at Milan in the summer of 1998. Fresh from his golden-goal heroics at Euro '96, Bierhoff's command of the air was the perfect weapon for Zaccheroni's wide, cross-heavy 3-4-3. He would finish the coming centenary season as Milan's leading marksman with 19 league goals -- and one of its heroes.

1997–98 season

A Second Barren Year: Tenth in 1997-98

Even Capello could not halt the slide: Milan won only 11 of 34 matches and finished 10th in 1997-98, missing European qualification for a second successive season. It was a nadir almost unthinkable for a club that had contested five of the previous nine European Cup finals. Capello departed once more, and Milan's patience with familiar faces finally ran out.

1998–2018

Adidas and the three stripes, 1998–2018

In 1998 Adidas returned as Milan's technical partner, opening a two-decade association marked by the famous three stripes down the sleeve. It was in these kits that Carlo Ancelotti's team conquered Europe again, wearing the white away shirt to beat Juventus at Old Trafford in 2003 and Liverpool in Athens in 2007, and the home stripes on the heartbreaking night of Istanbul in 2005. The Opel and later bwin sponsorships completed the look of Milan's last great golden era.

1997–98 season

Bierhoff's 27 goals top Serie A in 1998

Amid a grey Milan season that ended in mid-table, Oliver Bierhoff gave the San Siro something to cheer: 27 Serie A goals in 1997–98 and the capocannoniere (top-scorer) crown, edging Ronaldo and Alessandro Del Piero. The towering German, signed from Udinese, was the most dangerous header of a ball in Italy — a great many of those goals arrived by forehead. It was the first time a rossonero had led the Serie A scoring charts since Marco van Basten.

Boban conducts Croatia's fairy tale

At France '98 the newborn nation of Croatia stunned the world by reaching the semi-finals and finishing third, and their captain was Milan's midfield conductor Zvonimir Boban. With Davor Suker claiming the Golden Boot, Boban's Vatreni dismantled Germany 3-0 before edging the Netherlands in the third-place match. For Milanisti it was a quiet pride to watch the elegant playmaker of San Siro pulling the strings of the tournament's fairy tale.

Father on the Bench, Son with the Armband: France '98

France '98 staged a story unique in World Cup annals: Italy were led from the touchline by head coach Cesare Maldini — the Milan captain who had lifted the 1963 European Cup at Wembley — while his son Paolo, Milan's own captain, wore the Azzurri armband on the pitch, the sweeper's son now the world's finest full-back. Father directed, son marshalled, and Demetrio Albertini pulled the strings in midfield, another son of the Milan school. The campaign died on penalties against hosts France in the quarter-final, and two years later the same core would fall to France once more in the golden-goal heartbreak of the Euro 2000 final. No World Cup before or since has been shaped by such a rossonero father-and-son command.

Il centenario: the modern ACM 1899 crest

On the eve of its 1999 centenary the club settled the visual identity worn ever since: the upright shield of cross and stripes inside a red-framed oval, wrapped in gold, with 'ACM 1899' set in a clean sans-serif — initials and anno di fondazione bound into a single seal. Designed in 1998 and only lightly touched thereafter, it was refined in 2021 when the line weights were rebalanced, the inner black borders thickened and the red cross drawn bolder. It is the stemma the Milanisti of Adelaide know today.

Roberto Donadoni and the wingers Italians prized as 'ali pure'

Italian sources celebrated Roberto Donadoni as one of the last great 'ali pure' (pure wingers) of the Sacchi and Capello sides, a dribbler whose crosses fed van Basten. The Gazzetta admired his humility, calling him a 'gregario di lusso' (a luxury workhorse) who sacrificed personal glory for the team's shape. In an era of grand Dutch soprannomi, Donadoni represented the quieter Italian virtue the press summed up as 'sostanza' (substance) over spectacle.

Juventus Complete Milan's Humiliation at San Siro, 1997-98

In the 1997-98 season, as Milan endured one of the darkest campaigns of the modern era, Marcello Lippi's reigning-champion Juventus came to San Siro and won, driven by the goals of Del Piero and Filippo Inzaghi. The defeat deepened the crisis of a Rossoneri side that finished tenth, a world away from the Sacchi and Capello glories, while Juventus went on to reach a third straight Champions League final. It epitomised the humbling role-reversal of the transition years.

Eriksson's Lazio Overturn Milan

In the gloom of Capello's troubled second spell, the Coppa Italia offered Milan a route to salvage the season, and a 1-0 first-leg win at San Siro put the trophy within reach. At the Olimpico, Sven-Göran Eriksson's Lazio stormed back 3-1 to take the cup 3-2 on aggregate — the first silverware of the gilded biancoceleste era that would follow, and another wound in one of Milan's darkest modern seasons.

Serie A 1997-98

1997-98: Capello's return falls flat

Fabio Capello came back from Madrid with heavy transfer investment, but the magic was gone: Milan finished a dismal 10th, missing European qualification for a second straight year. The one route to redemption, the Coppa Italia, ended in final defeat to Sven-Goran Eriksson's Lazio. Capello was dismissed at season's end, and the club turned to Udinese's Alberto Zaccheroni for the rebuild.
