Summer 1997
In the summer of 1997 Milan lured Fabio Capello back from Real Madrid, hoping the man who had built the Invincibles could rebuild them again. Instead the Rossoneri stumbled through another dismal campaign, and the old alchemy was nowhere to be found. His homecoming would prove one of the great anticlimaxes of the era.
1996–97 season
Barely a year after lifting the title, Milan slumped to a scarcely believable 11th place in 1996-97, finishing only six points clear of the relegation zone. Two managers, a raft of failed signings and a listless squad combined to produce the club's worst league finish in over a decade. For a giant accustomed to European finals, it was a humiliation -- and proof that a great side had grown old all at once.

At the close of the 1996-97 season, Franco Baresi — the sweeper who had anchored Milan since 1977 — hung up his boots after two decades and some 719 official appearances, a total bettered in the club's history only by his defensive heir, Paolo Maldini. Il Capitano rarely left the pitch: libero, leader and one-club man, he collected six scudetti and three European Cups, and when he retired Milan withdrew the number 6 in his honour. The captain's armband he had worn for fifteen seasons passed to a worthy heir, Maldini, and a celebratory farewell match filled San Siro on 28 October 1997 — closing one dynasty even as Maldini's leadership opened the next chapter. His longevity, like his reading of the game, set the standard against which every rossonero defender is still measured.

Summer 1997
With Baresi gone, the armband passed along the back line to Paolo Maldini, son of Cesare, who had lifted Milan's first European Cup at Wembley in 1963. Paolo would carry the band for twelve seasons, raising the Champions League as captain in Manchester in 2003 — forty years after his father — and again in Athens in 2007. Baresi and Maldini between them held Milan's captaincy for twenty-seven consecutive years, a dynasty of loyalty unmatched in European football.

In the 1996-97 season, Marcello Lippi's Juventus, marching toward the Scudetto and a Champions League final, dismantled a declining, post-Capello Milan side in Turin. Alessandro Del Piero was at his imperious best, and the heavy defeat crystallised the shift of Italian supremacy from Milan's early-1990s dynasty to Juventus. It was one of several chastening results in a campaign that ended with Milan finishing a distant 11th, the low ebb of the transition years.

During Milan's late-1990s decline the fixture with Real Madrid took on the character of a measuring stick, the Spanish giants reasserting their historic ascendancy while Milan struggled through a fallow period between glories. The rivalry that began in 1956 endured even when the two clubs were unevenly matched, because history and prestige kept drawing them together in the European draw. Milanisti nursed the memory of past duels and the promise of revenge, knowing that in the great ledger of European football only Real could rival Milan's collection of continental honours. The white-versus-red story simply refused to end.

On 6 April 1997 Marcello Lippi's champions-elect Juventus came to San Siro and dismantled Milan 6-1 — the heaviest home defeat the Rossoneri have ever suffered in Serie A, a scoreline without precedent in the club's modern home history. Arrigo Sacchi, recalled mid-season after Tabárez's sacking, watched his second spell disintegrate as the reigning champions were pulled apart at will, Zinedine Zidane gliding through a champion side grown old all at once. The scoreline crystallised how completely Italian supremacy had passed from Milan's early-90s dynasty to Turin. Milan finished the season eleventh, Sacchi's second spell ended quietly that summer, and the 1-6 endures as the emblem of the post-Capello collapse.

The champions' defence disintegrated: Oscar Tabarez was sacked in early winter after a dismal start, and even the returning Arrigo Sacchi could not revive the side, which slumped to 11th place — Milan's worst finish of the decade. The Champions League brought fresh humiliation, elimination in the group stage sealed by a home defeat to Norwegian champions Rosenborg at San Siro. Marco Simone's goals were a rare bright spot in a season that announced the end of an era.

Théo Bernard François Hernández was born on 6 October 1997 in Marseille, France, into a footballing family — his father Jean-François had played in Ligue 1, and his older brother Lucas would win a World Cup with France. Signed from Real Madrid in the summer of 2019 for a modest fee, Theo reinvented himself at Milan as one of the most explosive attacking full-backs on earth, his marauding runs down the left flank becoming a signature of the Pioli-era Scudetto side of 2021-22. His goal-laden, box-to-box style — capped by an unforgettable end-to-end solo run against Atalanta — made the number 19 a fan favourite at San Siro.

After 719 official appearances, six scudetti and three European Cups across two decades, Franco Baresi hung up his boots at the end of the 1996-97 season, and Milan answered with a gesture without precedent in its history: the No. 6 shirt was withdrawn forever. A farewell night at San Siro in October 1997 sealed the honour, making Baresi's six one of the first numbers ever retired in Italian football. No Milan player has worn it since.

No physical object carries more meaning in football than the match-worn shirt, and Milan turned that reverence into policy: after Franco Baresi retired in 1997, the club withdrew his number 6 — one of the first retired numbers in Italian football — transforming a piece of kit into a permanent monument. In 2009 the gesture was repeated for Paolo Maldini's number 3, with the famous proviso that it could one day return on the back of one of his sons. Retiring a number is, in effect, an act of curation: the shirt ceases to be equipment and becomes a relic, framed, displayed and never worn again. Milan's preserved match-worn shirts, from the sweat-stained jerseys of European finals to the captains' armbands that accompanied them, form the emotional core of the club's material heritage.

In December 1997, in the depths of Milan's bleakest decade-half, the club plucked Maurizio Ganz from Inter — a rare mid-season crossing of the Milanese divide by a striker Ronaldo's arrival had made surplus. The angular poacher became an instant cult hero of the Curva Sud, which serenaded him with a chorus about how the goal always seemed to find him. His opportunist strikes off the bench became part of the folklore of the centenary title run of 1998-99.

Oluwafikayomi Oluwadamilare 'Fikayo' Tomori was born on 19 December 1997 in Calgary, Canada, to Nigerian parents before the family settled in England, where he rose through the Chelsea academy. He joined Milan on loan in January 2021 and made the move permanent that summer, his blistering recovery pace and front-foot defending forming the bedrock of the Scudetto-winning back line alongside Pierre Kalulu. A composed, England-capped centre-back, Tomori embodied the youthful, hungry identity of Stefano Pioli's rebuilt Milan.
