Sacchi Returns to a Sinking Ship

Sacchi Returns to a Sinking Ship

After a 3-2 defeat away at Piacenza, Tabarez was dismissed and Milan turned back to the architect of their late-1980s glory, Arrigo Sacchi, for a second spell in charge. But the magic of the Gullit and Van Basten years could not be conjured twice; the squad was ageing and fractured, and Sacchi could only steady, not rescue, the season. The prophet had returned, but there would be no miracle.

'The Ball Is the Only Thing That Should Run' — Sacchi's Credo in Print

Across decades of interviews, columns and later his own reflective writings, Arrigo Sacchi distilled his footballing gospel into a single maxim: the ball must do the running, never the man exhausting himself chasing it. He insisted his Milan was not built on athletes but on ideas, once explaining that he sought players who could 'read the game' and move as an eleven-piece organism rather than eleven individuals. His famous rebuttal to critics who noted he had never played professionally — 'to be a jockey, you don't need to have been a horse' — became the intellectual manifesto of the pressing, offside-trap collective that reinvented modern football.

George Weah, 'Re Leone' (the Lion King) of Liberia

The Italian press crowned George Weah 'Re Leone' (the Lion King), fusing his regal power with his African roots. His 1996 solo goal against Verona — collecting the ball near his own penalty area and slaloming almost the length of the field — was hailed by the Gazzetta as one of the most beautiful goals ever seen in Serie A. As the first African to win the Ballon d'Or (1995), Weah became a symbol Italians described with the word 'signorilità' as much for his charity as his football.

The capacity settles at ~75,000 all-seater

After the terracing of the old bowl was converted to seats and post-Italia '90 safety norms took hold, San Siro's capacity settled at roughly 80,000 in the 1990s and, with later reconfigurations, around 75,000 all-seater — far below the standing-era peak that once approached 100,000. The reduction is the price of the modern all-seated stadium: comfort and safety traded against the sheer massed density of the second-ring years. The figure is jointly managed by Milan and Inter, whose curve — the Curva Sud for Milan, the Curva Nord for Inter — divide the ground between them.

Capello's Fourth: The 1995-96 Scudetto

Milan reclaimed the title in 1995-96, finishing eight points clear of Juventus to lift the club's 15th scudetto and Capello's fourth in just five glorious seasons. The championship was sealed on 28 April 1996 with a 3-1 home win over Fiorentina, powered by the Weah-Simone strike partnership and Baggio's craft. It was the final flourish of an era of near-total dominance.

1995-96: Weah, Baggio and a fourth title in five years

George Weah arrived from PSG and promptly won the 1995 Ballon d'Or — the first non-European to do so — while Roberto Baggio crossed from Juventus; together they fired Milan to the club's 15th scudetto, Capello's fourth in five seasons. The UEFA Cup run ended in a quarter-final upset at Bordeaux, a 0-3 second-leg collapse after a 2-0 home win. Capello left for Real Madrid that summer, closing a dynasty of four titles, three Champions League finals and one immortal night in Athens.

Capello Departs for Madrid; Tabarez Takes the Reins

Fresh from delivering the 1995-96 scudetto, Fabio Capello decamped to Real Madrid in the summer of 1996, and the Rossoneri handed their bench to the cerebral Uruguayan Oscar Washington Tabarez. 'El Maestro' inherited a champion squad but a scattergun transfer market -- Edgar Davids, Christophe Dugarry, Jesper Blomqvist and Michael Reiziger all misfired -- and the reigning champions began to unravel almost from the first whistle. It was the opening act of Milan's most turbulent stretch in a generation.

Supercoppa Italiana 1996: Milan 1-2 Fiorentina

The champions' streak in this fixture ended at San Siro, where Claudio Ranieri's Fiorentina — Coppa Italia winners — upset Capello-built Milan 2-1, with Gabriel Batistuta the executioner-in-chief. The viola carried the trophy back to Florence, and the defeat proved an omen for a rossonero season that would unravel badly.

Weah's Coast-to-Coast Wonder Against Verona

Weah's Coast-to-Coast Wonder Against Verona

On the opening day of the 1996-97 season at San Siro, George Weah collected a cleared Verona corner at the edge of his own penalty area and simply kept running — carrying the ball virtually the full length of the pitch, gliding through Verona's entire team, a procession of defenders, before finishing coolly. Milan won 2-1, and the strike — scored barely a year after the Liberian's Ballon d'Or, with him still the reigning holder — is routinely ranked among the greatest solo goals in Serie A history and remains one of its most replayed individual efforts. The goal became shorthand for Weah's rare marriage of power and grace; in a season that would turn sour, it stands as a last flash of pure joy before the storm.

Rosenborg at San Siro: Out Before Christmas

On 4 December 1996, days into Arrigo Sacchi's second spell on the bench, Milan hosted Rosenborg of Trondheim needing only a draw to reach the Champions League quarter-finals. The Norwegian champions won 2-1 at San Siro, and a club that had contested three of the previous four European finals was eliminated at the group stage before Christmas. It remains one of the competition's great group-stage upsets, still celebrated in Norway as a miracle night in Milan, and it turned a difficult season into a crisis.
