King George Arrives — and Conquers the Ballon d'Or

In the summer of 1995 Adriano Galliani brought George Weah from Paris Saint-Germain, and within months the Liberian striker had rewritten history: that December he won the Ballon d'Or — the first (and still only) African footballer ever to receive it — along with FIFA World Player of the Year. Power, grace and impossible solo goals made 'King George' the spearhead of the 1996 and 1999 scudetti. He arrived a star and left, in 2000, a legend of the maglia rossonera.

Roberto Baggio's Milan nickname problem — the 'Codino' among rossoneri

When Roberto Baggio arrived at Milan in 1995 he brought his national nickname 'il Codino' (the little ponytail) and 'il Divin Codino' (the divine ponytail), coined by the Italian press for his Buddhist braid and celestial talent. At Milan, though, the fantasista struggled to fit Capello's rigid system, and the Gazzetta wrote of a genius partly caged. He still lifted the 1995-96 scudetto, a rare rossonero chapter for a player the Italian public loved above almost all others.

The Berlusconi Becomes a Milan-Juventus Ritual

From 1995 the Trofeo Berlusconi settled into a fixed rite: Milan versus Juventus, every August, Italy's two most decorated clubs meeting to unlock the new season. For eighteen editions through 2012 the friendly carried the charge of a Derby d'Italia in miniature, often level and settled from the spot, as in the goalless 1995 final that Juventus took 6-5 on penalties. Broadcast nationwide and dissected in the Gazzetta dello Sport, it turned a testimonial into an institution, part pre-season sharpener and part summer spectacle. Later revivals pitted Milan against San Lorenzo (2014) and Internazionale (2015), but the Bianconeri duels remain the trophy's signature.

The Crown Slips: 1994-95

The relentless run was briefly interrupted in 1994-95, as Milan surrendered their Serie A title to Juventus and fell in the European Cup final to a youthful Ajax. The double setback stung the Rossoneri into action. It prompted the ambitious summer swoop for George Weah and Roberto Baggio that would restore Milan to the Italian throne within a year.

The Divine Ponytail Crosses from Juventus to Milan

In the summer of 1995 Milan controversially prised Roberto Baggio — Italy's beloved Divin Codino, the 1993 Ballon d'Or winner and idol of the Juventus curva — away from their arch-rivals, swapping Turin's black-and-white for Milan's red-and-black. Direct transfers between the peninsula's two most decorated clubs were almost taboo, making the move a rare and jarring crossing of Italian football's grandest divide. Fabio Capello folded the fantasista into his side, and though the pragmatic coach often used him from the bench, Baggio's flourishes and his seven goals in twenty-eight appearances proved vital in delivering the 1995-96 scudetto in his first season at San Siro. A jewel of pure Italian genius for the champions-in-waiting, his move remains one of the rivalry's most storied border crossings.

Three Straight European Finals: Capello's Invincibles

Three Straight European Finals: Capello's Invincibles

Between 1993 and 1995, Fabio Capello's Milan reached three consecutive Champions League finals, stamping them as the dominant force in European football. They lifted the trophy once, with the unforgettable 4-0 demolition of Barcelona in Athens (1994), and fell short against Marseille (1993) and Ajax (1995). Married to a record 58-match Serie A unbeaten run between 1991 and 1993, these were the years of gli Invincibili, Capello's Invincibles.

Gunnar Nordahl, Milan's Eternal Bomber, Passes in Sardinia

On 15 September 1995 Gunnar Nordahl, the thunderous centre-forward of Gre-No-Li, died in Alghero, Sardinia, where he had settled in later life. The former Swedish fireman remains Milan's all-time top scorer in the league with 210 goals, a total amassed with a barrel-chested ferocity that terrorised Serie A defences through the early 1950s. Five times capocannoniere in Italy, he powered the scudetti of 1951 and 1955 and set a standard of goalscoring that no rossonero has since matched. His passing closed the middle chapter of the Swedish saga, leaving only Liedholm of the three still living.

Super Cup 1994, first leg: a goalless duel at Highbury

The champions of Europe, fresh from the 4-0 destruction of Barcelona in Athens, met George Graham's Arsenal, holders of the Cup Winners' Cup, on a tight winter night at Highbury. The famous back fours cancelled each other out in a 0-0 draw, leaving everything to be decided a week later at San Siro.

Super Cup 1994 won: Boban and Massaro sink Arsenal

Milan won the 1994 European Super Cup against Arsenal, the Cup Winners' Cup holders, as champions of Europe following the 4-0 masterpiece over Barcelona in Athens. The two-legged victory added another continental prize to Capello's remarkable collection. It underlined that this Milan side, even in transition, remained the benchmark of European football in the mid-1990s.

Benfica dispatched at San Siro

The holders' quarter-final against Benfica was decided by two contrasting nights: a 2-0 win at San Siro and a goalless stalemate at the Estádio da Luz, carrying Milan through 2-0 on aggregate and into the last four. A season that had begun with sanctions and exile was, tie by tie, being wrestled back onto the road to Vienna.

Boban silences the Parc des Princes

Paris Saint-Germain arrived in the semi-final as conquerors of Barcelona, driven by the irresistible George Weah — but at the Parc des Princes it was Zvonimir Boban who struck, his goal giving Milan a 1-0 first-leg win on French soil. Capello's side had taken control of the tie away from home, in the classic manner of the great European Milan. Within months, Weah himself would be wearing red and black, and lifting the Ballon d'Or in Milan's colours.

A fifth final in seven springs

In the return leg at San Siro, Milan beat Paris Saint-Germain 2-0 to complete a 3-0 aggregate and book their place in the Vienna final. It was a third consecutive European Cup final — the first such run by any club since the Bayern Munich of the mid-1970s — and a fifth final in seven seasons for the Milan of Sacchi and Capello. The destination was the Ernst-Happel-Stadion, the very ground where the season's troubles had begun with the Salzburg sanction.

1995 Champions League Final: Ajax 1-0 Milan

At Vienna's Ernst-Happel-Stadion, Louis van Gaal's youthful Ajax edged Milan 1-0 to close the Rossoneri's era of dominance. Substitute Patrick Kluivert, then 18, struck five minutes from time to settle Milan's third consecutive Champions League final. It was a narrow, dignified farewell to Capello's golden generation on Europe's biggest stage.

1994-95: Super Cup glory, Ajax heartbreak

The domestic streak ended with a fourth-place Serie A finish as Juventus took the title, though Capello's men beat Arsenal to win the European Super Cup. In the Champions League final in Vienna, an ageing Milan were undone by Van Gaal's brilliant young Ajax, teenage substitute Patrick Kluivert scoring the only goal five minutes from time. Defeat to Velez Sarsfield in the Intercontinental Cup completed a season of near-misses — Milan's third European Cup final in a row, but this one lost.

Mike Maignan Is Born

Mickaël 'Mike' Maignan was born on 3 July 1995 in Cayenne, French Guiana, before his family moved to the Paris suburbs where he came through the Paris Saint-Germain and later Lille academies. Arriving at Milan in 2021 to replace the departing Gianluigi Donnarumma, 'Magic Mike' silenced any doubts by keeping a string of clean sheets and anchoring the Rossoneri to the 2021-22 Scudetto with commanding shot-stopping and superb distribution. Beyond his goalkeeping, Maignan became a symbol of dignity in the Italian game when he led his team off the pitch in protest at racist abuse during a match at Udine in January 2024.

San Siro's Last Ovation for the Swan

Days after the retirement announcement, San Siro staged its goodbye before the pre-season Trofeo Berlusconi against Juventus. Van Basten walked onto the grass one final time and the stadium rose as one, the Curva chanting his name through a long, tearful ovation as he saluted every corner of the ground that had watched him redefine the art of the centre-forward. The 'Swan of Utrecht' left the pitch he had ruled with a wave, closing the most beautiful unfinished symphony in Milan's history.

17 August 1995: Basta

On 17 August 1995, more than two years after his last match, the 30-year-old van Basten announced what everyone feared and no one wanted to hear: the ankle would never again permit top-level football, and he was retiring. He left Milan with 125 goals in 201 appearances, three Ballons d'Or and two European Cups — a career amputated at its absolute peak. Years later the tortured joint would have to be surgically fused simply so that he could walk without pain. No injury in the club's history has ever cost football more.

Weah Wins the Ballon d'Or — First African Laureate

When France Football opened the Ballon d'Or to non-European players based at European clubs in 1995, George Weah seized the moment to become the first African ever named European Footballer of the Year, finishing a commanding 36 points clear of runner-up Jurgen Klinsmann. Signed from Paris Saint-Germain that summer, the Liberian led Milan's attack with a rare marriage of power, pace and delicacy for so large a man. In the same landmark year he was also acclaimed FIFA World Player of the Year, the worldwide vote echoing France Football, and with the African Footballer of the Year award alongside it, 1995 gave Weah a clean sweep no forward from his continent had ever assembled. From the streets of Monrovia to the podium in a Milan shirt, it remains one of football's great journeys — and a landmark for African football achieved in the red and black of Milan.
