Liedholm's Elegant Stella: the quiet bridge to the revolution

Nils Liedholm, the composed Swede who had once graced the Gre-No-Li forward line, returned to the bench and guided Milan to the 1978-79 scudetto — the tenth title, and the coveted 'stella' sewn above the crest. His football was a thing of poise and geometry: where catenaccio assigned each defender a man, il barone favoured defending space and building patiently from the back — an elegant, continental reading of the game rooted in his own playing intelligence, and an early Italian embrace of zonal, ball-playing football that stood apart from the era's grinding defensiveness. Serene and pipe-calm on the touchline, he blooded a teenage Franco Baresi, the future conductor of Milan's greatest defence, and delivered a title that felt like a statement of elegance amid difficult years. His zona experiments made Liedholm the crucial bridge between the catenaccio decades and the revolution Arrigo Sacchi would complete.

'Il Giorno' and the golden pen of Italian sport

For years the hub of Brera's football writing was the Milan daily *Il Giorno*, where his match reports read like literature — dense with neologism, irony and moral argument. He turned the *pezzo* (the match piece) into an essay, so that a Milan derby became a meditation on character, geography and national temperament. Younger Milanese and Italian journalists learned their craft imitating a style that no one could truly reproduce.

Albertino Bigon: The Quiet Marksman of the Stella

Alberto 'Albertino' Bigon spent nearly a decade at Milan as the opposite of a star: a Padova-born forward of quiet intelligence who ghosted into the box late and scored the goals nobody had choreographed. In the Stella season of 1978-79 he was the champions' leading scorer, his strikes carrying an elegant but ageing side through a tense spring run-in. Football would grant him a rare double distinction: a scudetto won with Milan as a player, and another won from the bench when he coached Maradona's Napoli to the 1989-90 title.

Albertosi at Thirty-Nine: The Old Cat of the Stella

When Enrico 'Ricky' Albertosi arrived from Cagliari in 1974, already in his mid-thirties, much of Italy assumed Milan had signed a goalkeeper for his sunset. Instead, Italy's keeper of Mexico '70 produced his club masterpiece in the Stella season of 1978-79, marshalling a miserly rearguard at thirty-nine with theatrical reflexes and the barked authority of a man half his age. Behind the teenage Franco Baresi and the young Fulvio Collovati, the veteran became one of the oldest men ever to win a scudetto — a last grand act before the Totonero scandal darkened the end of his Milan story.

Gianni Rivera moves upstairs to the boardroom

When Gianni Rivera, the 'Golden Boy' and 1969 Ballon d'Or winner, retired in 1979 after nineteen seasons, he moved directly upstairs into the Milan boardroom as a club executive and vice-president. His years in charge coincided with the darkest passage in the club's history - the Totonero betting scandal that sent Milan down in 1980 and a second relegation in 1982 - a humbling stewardship for the man who had been the team's on-field genius. He remained a leading figure until Silvio Berlusconi's takeover in 1986 opened a new era. Rivera then carried his rossonero prestige into national and European politics.

L'Addio del Golden Boy — Rivera Retires as Captain-Champion

With the tenth scudetto won — 'la stella', the star stitched above the badge — Gianni Rivera hung up his boots at thirty-five, going out as a champion at the moment of triumph. The 'Golden Boy' had arrived as a teenager from Alessandria in 1960 and wore Milan's number 10 for nineteen seasons, amassing 658 appearances (a club record at the time) and 164 goals for the only senior club he ever served — more than 500 of those appearances in Serie A, extraordinary numbers for a playmaker. Gianni Brera barbed him as L'Abatino, 'the little abbot,' for his slight frame and elegance, yet in 1969 Rivera became the first Italian ever to win the Ballon d'Or. The veteran capitano of the 1978-79 champions was Milan's supreme bandiera (banner/symbol): one shirt, a career defined by longevity and grace, the heartbeat of the club since 1960. No rossonero of his generation left a longer shadow, nor departed on a higher note — and as one legend closed a defining chapter, the young Baresi was already rising to carry the flame. Forza Milan.

The Unbeaten Shadow: Perugia Push the Stella to the Wire

Milan's tenth scudetto had to be wrung from one of the strangest title races Serie A has ever staged: Ilario Castagner's provincial Perugia passed through the entire 1978-79 season unbeaten — eleven wins and nineteen draws — and still finished second. Draws, however, do not make champions, and Liedholm's Milan finished three points clear, sealing the golden star on 6 May 1979. The paradox endures in Italian football lore: the year a team went thirty rounds without defeat and watched the stella stitched onto another club's shirt.

The Death of el Paron

The Death of el Paron

On 20 February 1979 Nereo Rocco died in his native Trieste, and with him passed the gruff Julian soul who had given Milan its first two European Cups (1963, 1969) and turned catenaccio into an art of the heart rather than mere calculation. Il Paron ruled the dressing room in thick Triestino dialect, mixing paternal warmth with a tactician's cunning, famously toasting his players before big nights. Milan mourned the man who, more than any coach before Sacchi, made the rossoneri a name that frightened Europe. His funeral drew the old guard of the 1960s who had won under him, and the club would later honour his memory as the patriarch of its competitive culture.

Home Taping the Rossoneri: Cassettes as a Fan Archive

As Milan closed in on its tenth scudetto in 1978-79 — the title that put the golden star above the badge — a parallel archive was being created in living rooms across Lombardy: fans holding a cassette recorder to the radio, or wiring it straight into the set, to capture live commentary of the decisive Sundays. In an era before home video, the compact cassette was the only way an ordinary tifoso could own a great match, and shoeboxes of hand-labelled tapes became private museums of goals heard but never seen. These amateur recordings now have genuine documentary value, occasionally preserving local broadcasts and moments that official archives missed. The professional counterpart came later, when RAI's Teche archive undertook the systematic preservation of Italy's broadcast heritage — but the fan with a cassette deck got there first, and bootleg audio remains a quietly important source for the sound of Milan's past.

La stella: the golden star for the tenth scudetto

On 6 May 1979, a goalless draw against Bologna at San Siro sealed Milan's long-hunted tenth Italian championship, and with it the right to wear the golden star, la stella, above the crest — following Juventus (1958) and Inter (1966) as the third club to wear it. Nils Liedholm's side, marshalled by the veteran genius of captain Gianni Rivera in his final campaign and a 18-year-old Franco Baresi at sweeper, ended a title drought stretching back to 1968. After three agonising runner-up finishes early in the decade, the wait for lo scudetto della stella was finally over. The 0-0 draw with Bologna at San Siro on 6 May 1979 sealed it, and the title was dedicated to Nereo Rocco, who had died just months earlier.

1978-79: La Stella — the tenth scudetto

Nils Liedholm's fluid, zone-based Milan won the club's tenth league title, earning the right to wear the golden star — la Stella — above the badge. It was the perfect farewell for 35-year-old captain Gianni Rivera, who lifted the scudetto in his final season before retirement, while young Franco Baresi anchored the defence and Albertino Bigon led the team's scoring. The 'scudetto della Stella' remains one of the most cherished in Milan's history.

Andrea Pirlo is born near Brescia

Andrea Pirlo was born on 19 May 1979 in Flero, on the outskirts of Brescia. Signed in 2001, he was reinvented by Carlo Ancelotti and Ancelotti's staff as a deep-lying regista, dropping in front of the defence to conduct the whole team like a metronome. From that new station he sprayed passes that carried Milan to the Champions League crowns of 2003 and 2007, redefining the art of midfield playmaking.
