1970s–1980s

'90º Minuto' and the Sunday-evening ritual of the goals

From its 1970 debut, RAI's '90º Minuto' — anchored by Paolo Valenti — became the Sunday-evening television ritual where Italians finally saw the day's goals, with a regional correspondent for each ground filing his report. Milan's Serie B humiliations and slow rebuilding of the shadowed early 1980s reached the nation through these highlight packages, the Rossoneri reduced to grainy clips introduced by Valenti's calm studio voice. The programme's roll-call of local giornalisti gave Milan's darkest years a familiar, almost domestic frame.

Enrico Albertosi, World Cup hands in a darkening decade

Enrico Albertosi brought to Milan the reflexes that had made him Italy's goalkeeper at the 1970 World Cup, guarding the rossoneri net through the 1970s and the 1979 scudetto della stella. A charismatic, spectacular shot-stopper, his Milan chapter ended painfully when he was swept up in the 1980 Totonero betting scandal that saw the club relegated to Serie B. His career thus straddled Milan's last title of the era and the abyss that followed, a symbol of both the brilliance and the turmoil of the shadow years.

Enrico Ameri and Milan through the Sunday collegamenti

Enrico Ameri was the other pillar of 'Tutto il calcio minuto per minuto', his urgent, driving delivery the counterpoint to Ciotti's rasp, and the pair's live hand-offs — 'scusa Ameri', 'scusa Ciotti' — became a catchphrase woven into Italian culture. Stationed wherever the biggest match unfolded, Ameri frequently carried Milan's fortunes into the collegamenti, his voice quickening at the decisive moment. To follow Milan by radio in the 1970s and 1980s was, in large part, to follow Ameri.

From South America to Tokyo: the Intercontinental Cup reborn

After two decades of two-legged transatlantic wars had repeatedly collapsed into violence, the Intercontinental Cup was reinvented in 1980 as a single neutral match staged in Tokyo, bankrolled by Toyota and played each December at Japan's National Stadium. For Milan it redrew the map of world football entirely: future world deciders would no longer mean the Maracana or the Bombonera, but a long flight east to a disciplined, curious Japanese public. It was a diplomatic and commercial reset that would define the rossoneri's intercontinental journeys for a generation to come.

Il Diavolo rosso: the flame-devil badge of the 1980s

In the early 1980s the club fielded an alternate, unmistakably modern mark alongside the classic shield — a grinning red devil stylised as a licking flame, with the newly won gold star tucked at its lower left. It gave cartoon form to the old soprannome il Diavolo and marked Milan's first real venture into a graphic 'brand' identity. The playful emblem faded within a few years, but it remains a vivid relic of the pre-Berlusconi era.

Il processo del lunedì puts calcio — and Milan — on trial

Aldo Biscardi opened his Monday-night courtroom on RAI, where pundits shouted over moviola freeze-frames and every refereeing slight was litigated like a capital case. Through Milan's darkest decade — the Totonero disgrace, two exiles to Serie B, then the resurrection under Berlusconi and Sacchi — the rossoneri were the programme's most reliable defendant and star witness alike. The formula was melodrama as national ritual, and when Biscardi later carried his 'trial' to Telemontecarlo, the shouting simply changed channels.

José Altafini's second life: 'Golazzo!' enters the language

The man who scored twice at Wembley in 1963 found a second footballing life behind the microphone. After hanging up his boots, José Altafini became a television pundit — first on Swiss-Italian channel TSI, later across the Italian networks — turning his Brazilian exuberance into broadcasting gold and greeting great goals with his trademark cry of 'Golazzo!', an exclamation that passed into Italy's football vocabulary. Few men have been adored in two entirely separate careers: the rossonero centre-forward of the Rivera years became the nation's grandfatherly voice of pure joy at the game.

The Curva Sud songbook — 'chi non salta è interista'

Beyond the official hymn, San Siro's Curva Sud carries its own oral tradition: the derby jumping-chant 'chi non salta è interista' (whoever isn't jumping is an Inter fan), which turns the whole terrace into a bouncing sea, and the war-cry 'Alè Diavolo' rolling beneath the banners. Sung in Italian threaded with Milanese cadence, these chants are the tifoseria's living dialect, learned by ear and handed down curva to curva. The precise words matter less than the roar they build.

Il Totonero: Milan Relegated for the First Time

On a black Sunday in March 1980, Guardia di Finanza walked into Serie A dressing rooms and led footballers away in handcuffs, cracking open the illegal-betting scandal known as il Totonero. Milan was found to have been ensnared in the fixing web and, alongside Lazio, was condemned to relegation to Serie B — the first descent in the club's history. President Felice Colombo was banned from football for life and the veteran goalkeeper Enrico Albertosi among the players suspended, a humiliation that scarred the rossoneri on the very threshold of the 1980s.

Renamed for Giuseppe Meazza — a name Milanisti swallow hard

On 3 March 1980 the Comune officially renamed the stadium Stadio Giuseppe Meazza, honouring the great forward who had died the previous year — a two-time World Cup winner most identified with Internazionale, though he also wore the Milan shirt late in his career. To much of Milan's support the name is a bitter irony, and to this day tifosi and much of the world stubbornly call it simply 'San Siro' after the district. The dual naming — official 'Meazza', popular 'San Siro' — is itself a small monument to the ground's split identity between the two clubs.

The Totonero Scandal Breaks

On the afternoon of 23 March 1980, officers of the Guardia di Finanza walked onto Italian pitches and arrested players in their kits at the final whistle, the illegal betting ring known as Totonero laid bare for the nation. Milan sat at the black heart of the affair: president Felice Colombo was detained alongside goalkeeper Enrico Albertosi, the syndicate having already fixed the Milan-Lazio match of 6 January 1980. It was the darkest hour in the Rossoneri story, a betrayal of the shirt that would soon bring an unthinkable punishment. Milano wept.

1979-80: Totonero — from the star to Serie B by decree

On the pitch Milan finished third in Serie A under Massimo Giacomini, defending the star with credit — but in March 1980 the Totonero match-fixing and illegal betting scandal exploded. Sporting justice relegated Milan to Serie B along with Lazio: president Felice Colombo was banned for life and goalkeeper Enrico Albertosi received a lengthy suspension. It was the first relegation in Milan's history, imposed in the courtroom rather than earned on the field.

Milan 3–1 South Australia — the Rossoneri in Adelaide (1980)

On their 1980 Australian tour, AC Milan came to Adelaide and defeated a South Australia state XI 3-1 — the club's only documented appearance in the city that, four decades later, would host one of its proudest supporters' clubs. For local rossoneri it remains a treasured footnote: the great Milan of Serie A, in the flesh on South Australian turf, long before Milan Club Adelaide carried the flame. Between it and a 2-0 win over Victoria at Melbourne's Olympic Park, the tour rolled on through the states.

Milan's First Tour of Australia (1980)

Fresh from a third-placed Serie A finish, AC Milan touched down in Sydney in mid-May 1980 for their first tour of Australia, a barnstorming circuit of the states. It began with a chastening 2-1 defeat to the Socceroos at the Sydney Sports Ground on 18 May — Gary Cole and Mark Jankovics doing the damage — before the rossoneri found their feet against the state sides. Australian press bristled at Milan's uncompromising defending, one report branding their tackling 'crude, rude and downright dirty'. The tour closed in Perth on 1 June 1980, where Milan edged Western Australia 3-2 at the WACA Ground before a modest crowd of around 3,500 — Giuseppe Galauzzo, Gabriele Carotti and Roberto Antonelli striking for the Italians, with a late WA rally through Frank Smerilli and Dave Fidoe giving the scoreline a nervous finish. And the tour carried a sting history never forgot: mid-journey, on the far side of the world, the players learned that the sporting courts had relegated Milan to Serie B over the Totonero betting scandal — the touring champions-elect of nothing, playing on regardless, a sporting jaunt turned into something far darker.
