Franco Baresi, 'Piscinin' — the little Kaiser

Because he came up slight and short, San Siro tagged the teenage Franco Baresi 'Piscinin,' Milanese dialect for 'the little one' — a tender diminutive for a boy who would grow into the most commanding libero of his age (and, more grandly, 'Kaiser Franz'). The dialect nickname carried a local intimacy: while his elder brother Beppe wore Inter's nerazzurro, il Piscinin became the eternal captain of the red-and-black. Few epithets so neatly fuse Milanese speech with rossonero devotion.

Gennaro Gattuso is born in Calabria

Gennaro Ivan Gattuso was born on 9 January 1978 in Corigliano Calabro, in the deep south of Italy. After a formative spell at Rangers, 'Ringhio' joined Milan in 1999 and became the snarling, ball-winning heart of the midfield, the perfect foil to Andrea Pirlo's serene creativity. His ferocious commitment underpinned two Champions League triumphs and made him a fans' favourite for its sheer, unbreakable spirit.

A Boy Called Baresi Makes His Debut

Away to Verona on 23 April 1978, Nils Liedholm handed a Serie A debut to a slight, silent 17-year-old from Milan's youth sector: Franco Baresi, the quiet kid from Travagliato. Inter had famously passed him over as too frail — while taking his brother Giuseppe. Within a year the youth-team graduate was a first-choice defender, and in 1978-79 he helped Milan to the Scudetto della Stella, the tenth league title that put the gold star on the shirt. Baresi never played for another club, staying twenty seasons and retiring as the greatest libero in the club's history and its eternal captain; the number 6 was retired in his honour. His rise crowned the late-1970s work of Milan's academy and set the template the club would follow for decades: find the boy, trust the boy, build the team around him. On that spring afternoon in Verona, though, he was simply a promising kid taking his first steps — quietly, the torch of Milan's defence had been lit.

Serie A 1977-78

1977-78: Liedholm returns and Baresi arrives

Gre-No-Li legend Nils Liedholm took over as coach and immediately restored order, guiding Milan back to a top-four finish — around fourth — with his pioneering zonal ideas. The season's most historic moment passed quietly: on 23 April 1978 a 17-year-old Franco Baresi made his Serie A debut against Verona, beginning a one-club career of twenty years. Gianni Rivera, now in his mid-thirties, played on as captain.

November 1978

Fog at San Siro, a rout at Maine Road

The third-round first leg against Manchester City became instant folklore: fog swallowed San Siro on the scheduled November evening and the match was postponed to the following afternoon, when City raced into a two-goal lead before Milan clawed back a 2-2 draw. In the Maine Road return City won 3-0 — one of the rare English routs of Milan in Europe. The rossoneri had the last word on the season, however, marching to the scudetto della stella, their tenth title.
