In its earliest years Milan made its home at the Trotter, a field near the site of today's Milano Centrale station, before settling at the Campo di Porta Monforte in the Acquabella district by the mid-1900s. It was on these modest, rope-ringed pitches — a world away from the San Siro to come — that the first rossoneri champions were forged.
Prima Categoria 1905
The 1905 championship, the first decided by a round-robin final group, was won by Juventus — their maiden title — but Milan never reached that stage, falling in the Lombard regional eliminatory as city rivals Unione Sportiva Milanese advanced instead. The rossoneri's consolation once more came in the Palla Dapples challenge matches, where they remained the team to beat.

23 April 1905
On 23 April 1905, at the Campo Acquabella in Milan, the rossoneri played the first international match in the club's history, beating the Swiss side Lugano 3-0. Rizzi opened the scoring and Herbert Kilpin — founder, captain and still the beating heart of the team — struck twice. The Milan XI that afternoon read: At. Trerè II, Kilpin, Moda I, Heuberger, Boselli, Ermolli, Pedroni I, G. Colombo, Rizzi, Al. Trerè I, Malvano, with Camperio II refereeing. The venue is a rare point where the sources genuinely disagree: the most detailed Milan statistical archives place the match at the Acquabella (where Milan also hosted San Gallo the following day), while some season chronicles still record it as played in Lugano — the modest ground where Milan's century-long international story quietly began, fifty-eight years before the club conquered Europe at Wembley.
