1906

1906: A Championship Won at the Table

Milan's 1906 title carries a distinctly Italian footnote. The championship came down to a play-off with Juventus after the sides finished level, and when the Turin club refused to contest the decisive replay under the agreed conditions, Milan was awarded the scudetto. Italian chronicles record it as a title assigned a tavolino (at the table, i.e. by forfeit rather than on the pitch) — an early example of the administrative dramas that would always shadow the Italian game.

Back-to-back titles in 1906 and 1907

Milan reigned again as Italian champions in both 1906 and 1907, a golden burst that confirmed the young club as the dominant force of the era. These were the twilight glories of Kilpin's own playing days, the veteran Englishman closing out a career that had helped forge a dynasty. The 1907 crown would prove Milan's last before the great schism of 1908, when dissenting members broke away to found Internazionale.

1905-06: Champions again — and Juventus walk away

Milan's second championship arrived amid controversy: level with Juventus at the top of the final group, the rossoneri were awarded the title when Juventus refused to contest the deciding replay ordered for the neutral US Milanese ground in Milan. Herbert Kilpin, now in the twilight of his playing days, added a second championship to the one he had won in 1901. Genoa, the fallen giants, finished behind them both.
