1900s

The Early Championship: A Tournament, Not a League

Italian sources emphasise how alien the pioneer Campionato Italiano was to the modern game: through the 1900s it was a knockout tournament, not a round-robin league, often decided in a single afternoon among a tiny field of northern clubs from Piedmont, Lombardy and Liguria. Teams first won regional eliminatorie (qualifying rounds) before meeting in a national final; entire 'championships' could be settled in one or two matches. Only in 1909–10 did Italy adopt the long league format, the girone all'italiana (round-robin) that endures today.

Campionato Italiano 1904

1903-04: Knocked out early, kings of the Palla Dapples

Genoa completed their sixth championship in 1904 while Milan again fell in the eliminatory rounds, short of the final. The season's real rossonero glory came in the Palla Dapples, the silver-ball challenge trophy of the era, which Milan would come to win more often than anyone else before the competition ended in 1909.
