Milan's 1903 campaign ended in the knockout eliminatory rounds, short of the final, where Genoa beat Juventus to claim yet another title. It was a season of transition for Kilpin's men, still fixtures among the championship's small circle of contenders but unable to reach a third straight final.

From 1903 the Italian game featured one of its most curious institutions, the Palla Dapples (the Dapples Ball) — a solid silver ball donated by Henri Dapples, the Swiss financier who played for and bankrolled Genoa. It worked like a boxing belt: the holder kept it until beaten, and any club could issue a formal sfida (challenge), making every fixture a title match. Milan's first recorded challenge came at Genoa in January 1904, and over the following five years the rossoneri, Genoa, the Turin clubs and the smaller Milanese sides passed the ball back and forth in a running duel that gripped the sporting press — a near-constant round of prestige fixtures beyond the tiny official championship. The peculiar coppa di sfida format is lovingly reconstructed in Italian sources long after English accounts forgot it.
