Alexandre Pato, 'il Papero' (the Duckling) — the prodigy Italians adored

Milan's young Brazilian Alexandre Pato — whose surname means 'duck' in Portuguese — was affectionately called 'il Papero' (the Duckling) by Italian fans and press, a nod to both his name and his fresh-faced arrival as a teenager. The Gazzetta hailed his blistering pace and precocious goals as the promise of a new 'fuoriclasse' (superstar), even nicknaming him 'il Pato' with genuine hope. Chronic muscle injuries would ultimately clip those wings, making 'il Papero' one of Italian football's great what-might-have-beens.

Fly Emirates — the Dubai airline on the stripes

In 2010 the Dubai carrier Emirates became Milan's principal shirt sponsor, the "Fly Emirates" wordmark settling in for one of the longest commercial partnerships in the club's history. The airline's name rode the red-and-black through ownership changes, lean years and the scudetto of 2022, becoming the defining sponsor of the modern era. Around 2018 the branding was streamlined across all Emirates-backed clubs, from "Fly Emirates" to simply "Emirates."

More Than a Marketing Stunt: Beckham's Milan Legacy

Across the two loans Beckham gave Milan roughly 33 appearances in all competitions and two goals — modest numbers that badly understate the mark he left. He trained like a trialist, deferred to Maldini and Pirlo, won over a dressing room and a sceptical press, and spoke of the club afterwards with an affection that was plainly genuine and warmly returned. The bond outlasted the injury: he reunited with Ancelotti at Paris Saint-Germain in 2013, and never stopped naming his San Siro spring among the great privileges of his career.

Reburial with Honours at the Cimitero Monumentale

In 2010 Herbert Kilpin was finally reinterred with honour at Milan's Cimitero Monumentale, the grand resting place of the city's most distinguished citizens, in a ceremony that at last acknowledged him as the founding father of AC Milan. Rossoneri supporters, club representatives and admirers gathered to give the Englishman the tribute that history had denied him for nearly a century. The reburial closed the circle opened by his lonely death in 1916, restoring the butcher's son from Nottingham to a place of permanent honour in the city he made his own.

Ruud Gullit's Reflections on the Dutch Revolution

In his writing and long-form interviews — later distilled in his tactical book 'How to Watch Football' (2016) — Ruud Gullit reflected on how Sacchi's Milan demanded a total mental commitment that transformed even world-class players. He described arriving in 1987 as the world's most expensive footballer and discovering a training ground where positional discipline and collective pressing overrode individual instinct. Gullit credited the Dutch trio's success not merely to talent but to Sacchi's insistence that beauty and organisation were inseparable, a lesson he carried into his own coaching career.

The Vismara and Milanello — the cradle of the Rossoneri

Milan's youth football has long been rooted in two sites: the Centro Sportivo Vismara in the south of Milan, home to much of the settore giovanile, and Milanello, the storied first-team base near Carnago opened in 1963 under Nereo Rocco's era of expansion. The Vismara pitches raised countless Primavera sides and became the emotional home of the club's female team too. Together they form the physical archive of how Milan grows its own.

Mourinho's Return and the Renewed Real Madrid Ties of the Modern Era

In the 2009-10 group stage Milan and Real Madrid resumed their ancient rivalry, José Mourinho's brief Milan connections and the two clubs' shared roster of legends lending the meetings extra spice as an ageing San Siro side traded blows with a rebuilding Madrid. Ronaldinho and Pirlo conjured moments of the old magic against the Galácticos, proof that even in decline Milan could still trouble the continent's aristocracy. The fixture remained European football's meeting of its two most decorated clubs, a rivalry measured not in league points but in the currency of history and honours. Every draw that paired them felt like an event.

The Second Coming: Beckham Returns Under Leonardo

The Second Coming: Beckham Returns Under Leonardo

Agreed in November 2009 and consummated in the new year, Beckham's second loan brought him back to a changed Milan — Ancelotti gone to Chelsea, Kaka sold to Madrid, and the elegant Leonardo now in the dugout. He made his second debut in a 5-2 Epiphany rout of Genoa at San Siro, once again chasing minutes with the 2010 World Cup in South Africa as the prize: Capello had made match sharpness the price of a place. No Englishman had ever played at four World Cups, and Beckham meant to be the first.

Ronaldinho's Indian summer under Leonardo

Under his compatriot Leonardo, Ronaldinho produced his fullest Milan season in 2009-10, orchestrating the attack with the invention that had once made him the world's best and finishing the campaign as the league's outstanding creator of goals for teammates. The high point came on 10 January 2010, when his two goals helped sweep Juventus aside 3-0 at San Siro. A year later the flame dimmed for good: in January 2011 his contract was dissolved and he went home to Flamengo, leaving behind two and a half seasons of intermittent enchantment.

Old Trafford Rises for Its Number 7 in Rossonero

The Champions League draw wrote its own script: Milan against Manchester United, Beckham against the club of his boyhood for the first time since leaving in 2003. After a 3-2 first-leg defeat at San Siro, he entered the Old Trafford return as a second-half substitute with Milan sinking to a 4-0 loss and a 7-2 aggregate exit — and the ground stood to applaud him all the same. Leaving the pitch he draped a green-and-gold scarf, the colours of the anti-Glazer protest, around his neck, a gesture that made front pages on both sides of the tie.

The Cruel Night: Beckham's Achilles Snaps at San Siro

Four days after Old Trafford, in the dying minutes of a 1-0 San Siro win over Chievo, Beckham pulled up with no opponent near him, reached down to his left heel and understood at once: the Achilles tendon had ruptured. Carried off in tears as San Siro rose to him, he was flown to Turku, Finland, where the renowned surgeon Sakari Orava repaired the tendon the next day. The prognosis of around six months ended his season, closed his Milan career at a stroke, and killed the dream of becoming the first Englishman to play at four World Cups — though Capello would still bring him to South Africa as part of the England staff.

2009-10: Leonardo's single season of flawed beauty

Rookie coach Leonardo, promoted from within, guided a post-Kaká Milan playing attractive football to third place in Serie A, behind treble-winning Inter and Roma. The Champions League brought a chastening round-of-16 exit to Manchester United, capped by a 4-0 defeat at Old Trafford (7-2 on aggregate). Marco Borriello emerged as the team's leading league scorer, and Leonardo departed at season's end, making way for Massimiliano Allegri.

Massimiliano Allegri Takes the Rossoneri Reins

In the summer of 2010 Milan turned to Massimiliano Allegri, the young Livornese tactician fresh from winning the Panchina d'Oro at humble Cagliari, handing him the bench once occupied by Rocco, Sacchi and Capello. Few expected the pragmatic 4-3-1-2 man to end Internazionale's stranglehold at the first attempt. He would do exactly that, marshalling a squad of ageing champions and hungry newcomers to the Scudetto in a single season. Forza Allegri.

Ibrahimovic Arrives from Barcelona

Ibrahimovic Arrives from Barcelona

On 28 August 2010 Milan pulled off a coup that electrified San Siro, capturing Zlatan Ibrahimovic on loan from Barcelona with an option to buy for around 24 million euros. The towering Swede, restless in Catalonia, brought swagger, backheels and a ruthless streak that had been missing from the rossonero attack. His goals and force of personality would prove decisive in dragging Milan back to the summit of Italian football.

Robinho Joins from Manchester City

Three days after landing Ibrahimovic, Milan completed a second marquee signing on 31 August 2010, prising the Brazilian showman Robinho from Manchester City for around 18 million euros. The samba forward, whose Premier League adventure had turned sour, rediscovered his joy alongside compatriot Pato and the giant Swede. His dribbles and darting runs added the flair that lit up Milan's title charge.

Kilpin enshrined in the Famedio

On 2 November 2010, following a public petition, Herbert Kilpin was inducted into the Famedio, the temple of honour at Milan's Cimitero Monumentale reserved for the city's most illustrious citizens. More than a century after he first lit the flame, the Englishman took his place among Milan's immortals. His memory is now cherished on both sides of the sea, with a plaque in his native Nottingham and a public house, 'The Kilpin,' keeping his legend alive. Rosso come il fuoco: the fire still burns.

Ibrahimović's early penalty topples the treble winners

On a rain-lashed night at San Siro, Zlatan Ibrahimović — cast off by Inter for Barcelona a year earlier and now wearing rossonero — coolly converted an early penalty against his old club to win the derby 1-0. Benítez's Inter arrived as reigning European champions and treble winners; Allegri's Milan left with the points and the psychological high ground of the city. The victory kept Milan on course for the 18th scudetto and announced that the balance of Milanese power had shifted back across the Navigli.
