'Preferisco la Coppa' — Ancelotti's Milan Memoir

Carlo Ancelotti's Italian memoir 'Preferisco la Coppa' (2009), co-written with Alessandro Alciato, plays on a pun — he 'prefers the Cup', but 'coppa' is also a cured Italian cold cut, a nod to his self-deprecating love of food and his Emilian farming roots. In it he recounts the agony of Istanbul 2005 and the redemption of Athens 2007 from the manager's bench, alongside the daily politics of managing under Silvio Berlusconi and Adriano Galliani. The book reveals a coach who cultivated a 'quiet' authority and a dressing room of egos — Maldini, Nesta, Pirlo, Kaká — through trust rather than fear.

Leonardo: From Playmaker to Bench

Leonardo, the cultured Brazilian who had worn the shirt with distinction, was handed his first head-coaching job at Milan in 2009, an emotional appointment that placed a beloved former player in charge with no prior managerial experience. His single season brought attacking, ambitious football and a memorable derby, but also the awkward reality of a novice learning on the job at a giant club. The episode captured Milan's post-Ancelotti uncertainty and Leonardo's own charismatic, improvisational style before he moved into directorial roles.

Ambrosini takes the band

The armband Baresi and Maldini had monopolised since 1982 passed in the summer of 2009 to Massimo Ambrosini, the tireless midfielder who had arrived from Cesena in 1995 and given Milan his entire prime. A two-time Champions League winner, he captained the side for four seasons and lifted the club's eighteenth scudetto in 2011 — the last league title of the Berlusconi era. His was a captaincy of grinta rather than glamour, honoured by the Curva for exactly that.

Maldini's 600-Plus in Serie A: A League Record of Longevity

Beyond his all-competition record, Paolo Maldini's more than 600 Serie A appearances placed him among the tiny handful of players ever to pass that mark in the Italian top flight, a league-longevity record for Milan. Deployed first at left-back and later as a commanding central defender, he adapted his game across generations to keep his place through three different decades of Milan football. His farewell in 2009 closed a Serie A career whose sheer duration is documented in Gazzetta's exhaustive appearance ledgers and in the tributes of a footballing nation.

Paolo Maldini: 902 appearances, one club

No one has worn the shirt more often than Paolo Maldini. From his debut as a 16-year-old in January 1985 to his farewell in 2009, he made 902 official appearances for Milan across 25 seasons — a one-club career of staggering constancy. His 647 Serie A outings long stood as a league record (later passed by Gianluigi Buffon), and the club retired his number 3 when he left, to be reactivated only if one of his sons reached the first team. Il Capitano's endurance is the single greatest appearance milestone in rossonero history.

Paolo Maldini: The 900-Plus Landmark of a One-Club Life

When Paolo Maldini finally hung up his boots at the close of 2008-09, he had amassed well over 900 official appearances for Milan across all competitions, a club record that stands unchallenged and likely unbreakable in the modern era of squad rotation. From his Serie A debut as a sixteen-year-old in January 1985 to his farewell at the San Siro, he wore only the rossonero shirt for twenty-five seasons, his tally including more than 600 Serie A matches. Maldini's autobiography and the many biographies of the Maldini dynasty frame the number not as an accountant's total but as a monument to fedeltà, one man's quarter-century of unbroken service.

The Number 3 Is Set Aside for the Maldini Dynasty

Upon Paolo Maldini's retirement, Milan announced that his number 3 shirt would be withdrawn from circulation — with one romantic proviso. The number was reserved not in perpetuity but in trust: it would return only if one of Maldini's own sons rose to wear it in the first team. It was a uniquely dynastic honour for a uniquely dynastic club, where Cesare had lifted the club's first European Cup in 1963 and Paolo had captained it to its sixth and seventh, and it turned a squad number into an heirloom.

Debut at the Olimpico: Beckham Silences the Sceptics

Debut at the Olimpico: Beckham Silences the Sceptics

Beckham made his Serie A debut in a 2-2 draw away to Roma, taking his place on the right of Carlo Ancelotti's midfield in a side that still counted Kaka, Pirlo, Seedorf and the ageless Paolo Maldini. Much of the Italian press had dismissed the loan as a shirt-selling stunt; ninety minutes of clean delivery, tactical discipline and honest running began changing minds at once. Within weeks Ancelotti was speaking of him not as a guest but as a player Milan needed.

First Goal in Rossonero: Four Days, Two Strikes

Two weeks into the adventure, Beckham scored his first Milan goal in a 4-1 away win over Bologna, wheeling away with the joy of a debutant rather than a global icon. Days later he curled home a trademark free kick against Genoa — his second and, as it turned out, final goal for the club. The burst crowned an integration so smooth that talk in Milanello had already turned from loan to permanence.

The Timeshare: Beckham Stays for the Spring

The Timeshare: Beckham Stays for the Spring

With Beckham flourishing and openly reluctant to leave, Milan pressed the Galaxy for a permanent deal; Los Angeles refused, and the clubs instead brokered an arrangement without precedent — the Englishman would finish the Serie A season in rossonero, then return to MLS in mid-July to serve both masters in a single year. The extension let him play through the spring of Maldini's farewell, finishing his first spell with two goals in around twenty appearances in all competitions. For a player who had conquered Manchester and Madrid, it said everything that he fought this hard to stay in Milan.

Farewell in print: the Maldini tribute volumes

When Paolo Maldini hangs up his boots at the end of the 2008-09 season after 902 official matches and a quarter-century in red and black, the farewell is immediately embalmed in print: commemorative volumes, club-endorsed photographic tributes and sports-daily specials retracing the dynasty from Cesare's 1963 European Cup to Paolo's five. This shelf of tribute literature turned a playing career into a piece of the club's official canon, the number 3 passing into legend alongside the books that recorded it.

Maldini's San Siro Farewell Marred by Ultras' Banners

Paolo Maldini's final home match, a 2-3 defeat to Roma, should have been pure coronation: tens of thousands rose to salute the captain who had given the club a quarter of a century. Instead, as he circled the pitch, a section of the Curva Sud unfurled banners recalling his old criticisms of the ultras and pointedly proclaiming Franco Baresi the only true captain, accompanying the gesture with whistles. The scene scandalised world football, drawing condemnation from across the game, while the rest of San Siro drowned the protest in applause. Maldini's dignified reply — that he was proud not to be like them — became the enduring epitaph of the day.

902 and Out: Maldini's Final Match and the Retiring of the No. 3

On 31 May 2009, one week after the San Siro storm, the true ending came at the Stadio Artemio Franchi, where Milan beat Fiorentina 2-0 on the season's final day and Paolo Maldini made his 902nd and last appearance in the red and black. Aged 40 and closing his 25th season — a career of five European Cups and seven scudetti, begun as a 16-year-old under Nils Liedholm in January 1985 — he retired holding the club's all-time appearance record and a then-record 647 Serie A matches, every one of them for Milan. His San Siro goodbye a week earlier against Roma had been soured by hostile banners from a pocket of the Curva Sud, a wound he never disguised; in Florence, a rival crowd with no stake in his legend gave him the standing ovation his own curva had withheld. The club retired his No. 3 with a singular clause: the shirt sleeps rather than dies, reserved should one of his sons, Christian or Daniel, one day establish himself in the first team. The greatest one-club defender in football history walked off for the last time.

2008-09: Ancelotti's farewell after eight glorious years

Ronaldinho arrived and Shevchenko returned on an underwhelming loan, but the season is remembered as the close of an era: Milan finished third in Serie A, returning to the Champions League, before Carlo Ancelotti departed for Chelsea after eight years and two European Cups. The UEFA Cup run ended early against Werder Bremen on away goals. Kaká and the emerging Pato led the scoring, and that summer Kaká was sold to Real Madrid for a world-record-class fee.

Kaka to Madrid: The Sale, and the Manchester City Revolt

In January 2009 Manchester City's Abu Dhabi owners bid a reported sum north of £100 million for Kaka; Milan's ultras massed outside the club's headquarters in protest, and the deal collapsed. Six months later he left anyway, sold to Florentino Perez's Real Madrid for around 65 million euros. Contrary to popular legend it was not a world record: it stood second only to Zidane's 2001 fee and was eclipsed within weeks by Cristiano Ronaldo's 94 million, and it marked the beginning of the end of the Ancelotti dynasty.

From Paper Stubs to the Tessera: The Changing Ticket

For most of San Siro's history the ticket was a small paper artifact — colour-coded by sector and tier, torn at the turnstile and, for the faithful, saved: stubs from nights like Istanbul 2005 and the redemption of Athens 2007, when Filippo Inzaghi's two goals beat Liverpool, are kept by fans like holy cards. The mid-2000s changed the object itself, as Italy's stadium-security laws made tickets nominative, printing the holder's name where once there was only a seat number. Then in 2009 interior minister Roberto Maroni introduced the tessera del tifoso, a supporter ID card required for away travel and season tickets, igniting years of protest from ultras across Italy — Milan's Curva Sud included — who saw surveillance where the state saw safety. The humble ticket thus became a battleground, and the old anonymous paper stub, once litter, is now a collectable trace of a freer matchday era.
