Rebuilding From the Rubble

When the war ended in 1945 Italian football had to be reassembled from a shattered country, with damaged grounds, depleted squads and a fractured league structure that took time to reunify north and south into a single Serie A. Milan, like every club, faced the practical wreckage of the conflict before the game could return to something like normality by the late 1940s. This reconstruction laid the immediate groundwork for the Gre-No-Li renaissance that was about to dawn.

Wartime suspension 1943-45

1943-45: War halts the championship

After the September 1943 armistice split Italy in two, the national championship was suspended and no national league was contested until late 1945. Milan took part in improvised wartime competition in the north, including the 1943-44 Campionato Alta Italia — famously won by the Spezia firefighters' team, a title honorifically recognised by the FIGC in 2002. With the liberation in 1945 the club shed the italianised 'Milano' and restored its historic name, Associazione Calcio Milan.
