Football in the Ruins — The 1944 Campionato Alta Italia

As the Allied advance split Italy along the Gothic Line, national Serie A was abandoned after 1943 and the German-occupied north improvised the 1944 Campionato Alta Italia — a makeshift tournament played amid air-raids and shattered railways. Milan, competing under its Italianised wartime name 'Milano', took part in the surreal, blood-and-rubble competition famously won by the firefighters' team of La Spezia, later honoured with a commemorative tricolore. With bombs falling and the peninsula torn in two, no champion was crowned in 1944–45 and organised football all but collapsed until the peace — yet the tournament endures as football played as an act of defiant normality in a country at war.
