Giuseppe Meazza's Forgotten Milan Interlude

One of football's most under-remembered footnotes is that Giuseppe Meazza, the immortal 'Balilla' of the nerazzurri, crossed the city to play for Milan from 1940 to 1942. Hampered by the chronic injury that had nearly ended his career, the ageing maestro still added a handful of goals in red and black before wartime upheaval scattered Italian football. It remains a startling image: the great Inter idol in Milan's colours.

1939-40: Boffi's 24 goals as war closes in

Aldo Boffi retained the capocannoniere title with 24 goals — a remarkable haul for the era — but Milano could not convert his prolific form into a title challenge as Ambrosiana-Inter edged out Bologna for the championship. Within weeks of the season's close, Italy entered the Second World War, casting its shadow over the campaigns to come.

Peppino Meazza Crosses the Divide

On 28 November 1940, the twilight of a legend arrived at Milan when Giuseppe 'Peppino' Meazza — Inter's greatest son and a two-time World Cup winner — pulled on the rossonero shirt. Past his imperious prime, he still graced two seasons for the Rossoneri (1940–42), making 42 appearances and scoring 11 goals, one of the rare men to cross the Milanese divide without stirring hatred on either side. In 1980 the San Siro would be renamed the Stadio Giuseppe Meazza in honour of the man who starred for both clubs of the city.
