1938–1942
In the shadow years, Aldo Boffi was Milan's thunder — a ruthless centre-forward who topped Serie A's scoring charts three times in four seasons (1938–39, 1939–40 and 1941–42), including a devastating 24-goal haul in 1939–40. His 136 goals for the club rank him among the great Rossoneri marksmen of any era, a 'cannoniere dimenticato' whose exploits kept the fire burning through the wilderness.
1939-1945
In 1939 Mussolini's regime, waging its campaign of autarchia against foreign words, forbade the club's cherished English name and ordered it rebranded Associazione Calcio Milano — Italianising even the city from the anglicised 'Milan' to 'Milano'. Crest, letterhead and shirt followed the decree, the lictorian fasces stamped upon the badge, and by the late 1930s the side competed as Associazione Calcio Milano. The English 'Milan' — a living link to Herbert Kilpin and the founding Englishmen — was effectively outlawed. After the war the club reclaimed its identity with a pointed compromise, returning in 1945 to Associazione Calcio Milan: keeping the English spelling the founders had chosen, which the Rossoneri have proudly borne ever since. The episode remains a reminder that in the drought years politics reached even onto the football pitch.

As Europe slid toward the Second World War at the end of the 1930s, Italian football continued under increasing strain, its calendar and squads distorted by mobilisation and the demands of the regime. Milan navigated these tense seasons before the wider conflict engulfed the country, playing on while the political ground shifted beneath the game. The texture of these years, the anxiety, the propaganda, the thinning crowds, is largely absent from the celebratory histories.

In the 1930s the twice world-champion Italy of Vittorio Pozzo drew its spine from Juventus, Bologna and the Ambrosiana of Giuseppe Meazza, leaving Milan a peripheral supplier to the Azzurri. Yet the rossoneri still sent men to the national team, above all the prolific centre-forward Aldo Boffi, a Serie A capocannoniere around 1939-1942, who earned a handful of caps in the blue shirt. The link was thin but genuine, proof that even in lean decades Milan fed talent to the Nazionale.

Born just north of the city in Cusano Milanino, "il Trap" was the ferocious, tireless midfield destroyer of Nereo Rocco's great side. Charged with man-marking the likes of Pele and Eusebio, and famously subduing them, he won two European Cups and two Scudetti across fourteen years in the Rossoneri shirt. He would later become one of the most decorated managers the game has ever known, but San Siro was always his first home.

Under the fascist regime's Italianisation drive the club's name was changed in 1939 to 'Associazione Calcio Milano', and centre-forward Aldo Boffi won his first capocannoniere crown as Serie A's top scorer with 19 goals. Bologna took the scudetto while Milano, for all Boffi's prowess, settled back into the middle reaches of the table.
