Death of Franco Baresi, the eternal Capitano

Franco Baresi died on 31 July 2026, aged 66. The club's announcement read, in part, 'Milan is in tears following the passing of Franco Baresi', adding that his example and integrity would remain etched in the club's DNA 'just as his iconic number 6 shirt is'. Baresi had undergone surgery for a pulmonary nodule in 2025, followed by immunotherapy; his last great public appearance came in February 2026, carrying the Olympic torch into San Siro at the opening ceremony of the Milano Cortina Winter Games. His career needs no embellishment: one club, 1977-1997; 719 official matches (470 in Serie A) and 33 goals; six scudetti, three European Cups, two Intercontinental Cups and four Italian Super Cups; captain for fifteen seasons across the Sacchi and Capello dynasties; the number 6 retired in his honour in 1997. Paolo Maldini published a farewell letter the same day — 'How will we manage without our Captain?' — writing that Baresi had protected him as a child, guided him as a young man and inspired him as an adult. Thousands filed past the chapel at Casa Milan, and the funeral was held on 4 August at the Basilica of Sant'Ambrogio, with Maldini, Van Basten, Filippo Galli and Massaro among the pallbearers and Beppe Bergomi, his nerazzurro mirror-image, in mourning beside them. Proposals immediately followed to name the Curva Sud — and a stand of the future stadium — after him.

The first Milano derby on Australian soil — Perth honours Baresi

Five days after Franco Baresi's death, the Derby della Madonnina was played outside Italy for the first time: Milan 1-1 Inter at Optus Stadium, Perth, on Wednesday 5 August 2026, before an official attendance of 52,310 — the centrepiece of the Calcio Italiano week (5-11 August) that also brought Juventus and Palermo to Western Australia. Federico Dimarco put Inter ahead; Christopher Nkunku equalised from the penalty spot. The night belonged to the Capitano. Milan warmed up in Baresi's number 6 shirt and wore black armbands; a minute of silence was observed with a tribute on the stadium screens, the ceremony pushing kick-off back some ten minutes; in the sixth minute both teams stopped as the whole ground rose in applause, and banners reading '6 per sempre capitano' hung in the stands. The Australian rossoneri made it their own: Milan clubs from across the continent converged on Perth and marched the final kilometre to the ground singing for Baresi. The great Australian tifo raised above AC Milan's own tribute banner was designed by Milan Clubs Australia — the designer being Paul Fantasia, president of Milan Club Adelaide — and printed by Kojo, whose crew stood in with members on the night to unveil and secure it for the full ninety minutes. For the fans who watch every derby somewhere between midnight and 6am Adelaide time, the mountain had finally come to them.

Allegri's Rebuild Falls Short of Europe

Unburdened by midweek fixtures, Allegri's Milan pressed near the top of Serie A through the early months of 2025-26, buoyed by Modrić and Pulisic, before a spring collapse proved costly. The Rossoneri again missed Champions League qualification as Inter took the title, the campaign offering flashes of the old authority without the consistency to match. As the club pushed on toward its new-stadium future, the search for sustained glory continued.

Milan Club Adelaide: Rossoneri Under Southern Skies

Carried abroad by Italy's great post-war migrations, the rossonero faith took root in Australia, where Milan Clubs gathered emigrant families and their locally born children around the fortunes of the Diavolo. In Adelaide, long home to one of the country's strongest Italian communities, Milan Club Adelaide keeps that flame alight, hosting match-day gatherings half a world away from San Siro. In doing so it links a corner of South Australia to the century-long tradition of organised tifoseria and to the worldwide network of official Milan Clubs. Founded in 2021 and registered with the Associazione Italiana Milan Club, Milan Club Adelaide gathers at Radio Italiana 531 in Hindmarsh — a short walk from the ground where the rossoneri beat South Australia in 1980 — and forms part of Milan Clubs Australia, among the largest official AC Milan supporter networks outside Europe.

Captain Maignan signs new contract to 2031

On 31 January 2026, AC Milan officially announced that captain and goalkeeper Mike Maignan had renewed his contract until 30 June 2031. The five-year extension ended a long-running saga over the Frenchman's future, with his previous deal due to expire in the summer of 2026, and Italian media reported the club nearly doubled his salary to around five million euros per year. The renewal secured one of the team's cornerstones, though by summer 2026 reports suggested Milan would still listen to offers in the region of 40-50 million euros.

2025-26: Fifth place, one point from the Champions League

Massimiliano Allegri's first season back ended in heartbreak on the final matchday, 24 May 2026, when Milan lost 2-1 at home to Cagliari and slipped out of the top four. The Rossoneri finished fifth on 70 points (20 wins, 10 draws, 8 losses), a single point behind fourth-placed Como (71), as Inter claimed their 21st Scudetto with 87 points; Napoli (76), Roma (73) and Como joined Inter in the Champions League while Milan and sixth-placed Juventus (69) settled for the Europa League. Rafael Leão was Milan's top league scorer with 9 goals, with Leão and Christian Pulisic leading all competitions on 10 apiece. After a season with no European football and cup exits to Lazio and Napoli, the near-miss cost Allegri his job and ushered in a summer of change.

Rúben Amorim appointed head coach

Rúben Amorim appointed head coach

On 16 June 2026, AC Milan appointed Rúben Amorim as head coach of the men's first team on a contract running until 2028, replacing Massimiliano Allegri, who was sacked after failing to secure Champions League football. The 41-year-old Portuguese, dismissed by Manchester United in January 2026 after 63 games in charge, was chosen after the club also held talks with USMNT manager Mauricio Pochettino. 'There are ambitions that stay with you throughout your career, and coaching AC Milan has always been one of mine,' Amorim said on his unveiling. Within weeks he moved to shape the squad, publicly backing Luka Modrić to stay, with reports on 8 July 2026 indicating the Croatian had decided to remain for 2026-27. At his first press conference at Casa Milan on 8 July 2026 he set the tone — 'I believe in the project, we want quality and wins' — and the football identity to come: a 3-4-3 built on aggressive pressing, quick vertical passing and attacking wing-backs.

The 25-year-old, who scored 45 goals in 131 appearances for PSG and won 12 trophies in Paris including two Champions League titles, signed a five-year deal running to June 2031 and became Rúben Amorim's first signing. Days later, a deal worth around 30 million euros for Lazio centre-back Mario Gila was also agreed, taking Milan's early summer spending to roughly 110 million euros.

First demolition work at San Siro as new stadium takes shape

In early July 2026, the first physical signs of the new stadium project appeared at San Siro with the demolition of the historic Curva Sud ticket office, built ahead of the 1990 World Cup, and the fencing-off of the surrounding area; a temporary fan services facility is planned on the site. Milan and Inter, who completed the purchase of the Meazza and surrounding land in November 2025, had submitted official notice of commencement of works to the city in March 2026 and are finalising the Foster + Partners and MANICA design for a roughly 71,500-capacity arena. The project still faces hurdles: geological surveys found contamination requiring remediation, and five appeals from residents' associations were pending before the Lombardy Regional Administrative Court, with a ruling expected within about 60 days.
