AC Milan Women born from Brescia's title-winning core

AC Milan Women born from Brescia's title-winning core

In the summer of 2018 AC Milan established its senior women's team, A.C. Milan Women, effectively absorbing the sporting rights and much of the roster of Brescia Femminile — one of the strongest clubs in the Italian women's game, holders of multiple Scudetti and Coppe Italia. Overnight the Rossonere inherited a competitive Serie A Femminile side rather than starting from the amateur base, a strategic short-cut that placed them immediately among the league's contenders. The move was part of a wider push, mandated by the FIGC, for Serie A men's clubs to found affiliated women's sections.

Ringhio takes the reins: Gattuso returns as teacher, not warrior

Ringhio takes the reins: Gattuso returns as teacher, not warrior

Rino Gattuso, the snarling midfield warrior of the Ancelotti glory years, came back to Milan not as a fighter but as a teacher — first taking charge of the Primavera before being promoted to the senior bench in November 2017 after Vincenzo Montella's dismissal. Known as 'Ringhio' for his growling intensity, he steadied a listing ship through sheer force of personality and honest, combative football, demanding from his players the same fight that had defined his own career while famously deflecting credit in self-deprecating, quotable press conferences. He restored fight and organisation to a fragile young squad, guided it to the Europa League and, in 2018-19, to a fifth-place finish that fell agonisingly short of Champions League qualification. True to his fierce integrity, he resigned rather than cling on at season's end — a legend giving back to Milan the dignity and identity he had helped forge as a player.

'The Lord of Milan': Kilpin's life becomes a docufilm

In the late 2010s the story of founder Herbert Kilpin reached the screen in 'The Lord of Milan', a docufilm inspired by Robert Nieri's biography, blending dramatised reconstructions of 1890s Milan with the tale of the Nottingham lace-worker who lit the rossonero flame in 1899. Screened for supporters, it carried the founder's modern rehabilitation to its natural conclusion: from an unmarked grave and near-oblivion to leading man in his own film. The moving image completed what the centenary historians had begun — Kilpin restored, in red and black, before the eyes of a new generation.

Franco Baresi, honorary vice-president and living conscience

No shirt is more sacred at Milan than Franco Baresi's No. 6, retired when il capitano hung up his boots in 1997 after twenty seasons and over 700 appearances. Rather than leave, Baresi stayed to shape the youth sector, and when Elliott's stewardship began in 2018 he was named honorary vice-president - the club's living conscience and its most dignified ambassador. Whether presenting trophies, greeting the Curva or fronting the club's heritage, the sweeper-libero remains the human bridge between the Sacchi immortals and the modern side. Milan senza Baresi non sarebbe il Milan - Milan without Baresi would not be Milan.

Puma takes the kit, 2018

In 2018 Milan signed a long-term deal making Puma its technical sponsor, ending the Adidas era and returning the club to the aggressive, fashion-forward kit market of the modern game. The German brand made the shirts of Milan's resurgence and the 2022 title run, and leaned hard into lifestyle, dropping designer "fourth kits" and streetwear collaborations alongside the traditional stripes. It signalled Milan's ambition to trade once more among football's biggest commercial names.

Romagnoli, the scudetto captain

After Bonucci's brief tenure ended with his return to Juventus, Gennaro Gattuso gave the armband in the summer of 2018 to Alessio Romagnoli, a centre-back of just 23. He wore it through the rebuild under Pioli, leading Milan back into the Champions League and finally, on 22 May 2022 in Reggio Emilia, hoisting the club's nineteenth scudetto after a 3-0 win over Sassuolo — Milan's first title in eleven years. Weeks later he left for his boyhood club Lazio, his mission complete.

2018-19 season

The first Rossonere derby and a debut season of establishment

In their inaugural 2018-19 Serie A Femminile campaign the Milan Women, coached by Carolina Morace, quickly announced themselves as a top-half force and finished third in their first season. Fixtures with reigning powers Juventus and Fiorentina gave the female game a visibility in Milan it had never enjoyed under the club's crest. It was the club's first serious institutional commitment to women's football since the sport's Italian boom.

From San Siro to the Presidency: Weah Leads Liberia

On 22 January 2018 George Weah was sworn in as President of Liberia, completing a journey without precedent in the history of sport: from the San Siro turf and the 1995 Ballon d'Or to his nation's highest office. No other footballer — let alone a rossonero — has ever risen to lead a country. For milanisti, the boy from Monrovia who conquered Milan remains proof of how far the red and black shirt can travel.

'Loro': Sorrentino films the patron in his twilight

Paolo Sorrentino's two-part epic 'Loro', released in Italian cinemas in spring 2018 with Toni Servillo as Silvio Berlusconi, painted a baroque, hallucinatory portrait of the man who owned Milan for three decades — his court, his villas, his hunger to remain adored. Football flickers only at the edges of the film, yet its subject is inseparable from the club: the presidency that delivered five European Cups is part of the very myth 'Loro' dissects. For rossoneri audiences, arriving barely a year after Berlusconi sold the club, it played as a strange mirror — the empire that bankrolled their golden age, seen in its decadent twilight.

Humiliation in Rome: 4-0 in the Coppa Italia final

On 9 May 2018 at the Stadio Olimpico, Gennaro Gattuso's Milan were torn apart by Massimiliano Allegri's Juventus, crushed 4-0 with all four goals arriving in a ruthless second half through a Mehdi Benatia double, Douglas Costa and a Nikola Kalinić own goal. It was the club's heaviest Coppa Italia final defeat, a brutal measure of the gulf between Italy's dominant force and a Milan still searching for stability amid the post-Berlusconi ownership turmoil. The Curva could only watch as the Bianconeri lifted a record fourth consecutive Coppa Italia.

2017-18: The €200m gamble and Gattuso's arrival

The new Chinese ownership bankrolled a spectacular circa-€200 million summer spree — Bonucci, Biglia, Kessie, Calhanoglu, Andre Silva and more — but results lagged and Montella was sacked in November, replaced by club icon Gennaro Gattuso, who steadied the team to a sixth-place finish. Young academy striker Patrick Cutrone emerged as an unexpected leading scorer, while Milan lost the Coppa Italia final 4-0 to Juventus and fell to Arsenal in the Europa League round of 16. Financial fair play trouble shadowed the ownership all season, foreshadowing Li Yonghong's default and Elliott Management's takeover in the summer of 2018.

AC Milan Women are born via the Brescia sporting title

On 11 June 2018 AC Milan announced they would take part in the Serie A Femminile championship after acquiring the sporting rights of Brescia Calcio Femminile, the successful club based in Capriolo whose Serie A licence gave the Rossonere immediate entry to the top flight. The official acquisition of the Brescia title was reported the following day, on 12 June 2018. Carolina Morace was installed as the club's inaugural head coach, and the squad inherited several Brescia stars including striker Valentina Giacinti. It marked the birth of the women's section of the club, 119 years after the men's team was founded.

The Last Issue of Forza Milan!

In 2018, after more than half a century of continuous publication, Forza Milan! ceased publication, closing the story of Italy's longest-lived club magazine some 55 years after its founding in 1963. The final issue reached newsstands on 16 June 2018 with Gennaro Gattuso on the cover. Its end was quiet — a casualty of the digital age it had long outlasted, as club communication moved to websites, apps and social media. What remains is extraordinary: an unbroken monthly archive stretching from the Rivera years through the Dutch era and the Berlusconi decades, written and photographed as it happened, for fans who had no other window onto their club. For the historian, its yellowing pages are now a primary source; for the tifoso, they are a family album.

Penalty marathon in California

Milan's 2018 International Champions Cup campaign took the club across the United States to meet Manchester United, Barcelona and Tottenham. The standout night came against Manchester United in California, where a level scoreline spilled into a marathon penalty shootout that Milan ultimately survived. Even amid the artificial theatre of a summer friendly, the old winners' instinct flickered under the American floodlights.

Elliott Management: the hedge fund that seized and stabilised Milan

In July 2018 the house of cards collapsed: Li Yonghong failed to repay Elliott and missed a required capital injection of some 32 million euros, triggering the fund's enforcement of the security behind its loan. Elliott Management - the activist hedge fund of Paul Singer, with his son Gordon steering the London operation - wiped out Li's equity, took 100% of the club and injected fresh capital to stabilise it. It installed a new board under chairman Paolo Scaroni, becoming an accidental owner determined to restore Milan to financial health and, in time, to sell at a profit.

Carlo Pellegatti, the Diavolo's baroque bard

For 35 years Carlo Pellegatti was Milan's own chronicler on Milanese radio and Mediaset television, a proudly declared tifoso in the press box who festooned rossoneri players with operatic nicknames drawn from mythology, cinema and literature. When his long Mediaset tenure ended in 2018 he simply changed pulpit: the YouTube channel he opened that year turned his greeting to the 'amici rossoneri' into a daily ritual for hundreds of thousands of milanisti worldwide. In an age of studiously neutral analysts, Pellegatti's unashamed lyricism kept alive an older idea — that a club deserves not merely reporters, but a bard.

First competitive match: a 6-0 statement win

AC Milan Women made their competitive debut on 22 September 2018, thrashing Pink Sport Time (Pink Bari) 6-0 on the opening matchday of the 2018-19 Serie A Femminile. The emphatic scoreline set the tone for a strong inaugural campaign under Carolina Morace, which ended with a third-place finish, just one point short of Champions League qualification. Captain and striker Valentina Giacinti crowned the debut season by winning the league's Golden Boot with 21 goals.

Icardi's 92nd-minute dagger

On 21 October 2018 a tense, goalless derby was settled in stoppage time when Mauro Icardi rose to head Inter's winner in the 92nd minute, breaking rossonero hearts at San Siro. It was a bitter emblem of Milan's barren years, undone by a single moment and left adrift of the Champions League places. Icardi wheeled away in triumph as the Curva Nord erupted.

2018-19 Europa League: Gattuso's Group-Stage Exit at Piraeus

Gennaro Gattuso's Milan returned to the Europa League group stage in 2018-19, drawn with Real Betis, Olympiacos and Luxembourg's minnows Dudelange. Carrying Gonzalo Higuaín up front, the Rossoneri never quite mastered the group and travelled to Piraeus in December 2018 needing only to avoid defeat to progress. Olympiacos beat them 3-1 under a hostile Greek night, and Milan were eliminated — another false dawn in the long post-scudetto drought before the Elliott-era revival finally took hold.
