Gianluigi Donnarumma, the teenage phenomenon at San Siro

Gianluigi Donnarumma announced himself as a generational talent when he debuted for Milan at just sixteen in 2015, his enormous frame and cat-like reflexes evoking comparisons with the greatest Italian keepers. For six seasons he was the standout figure of a rebuilding rossoneri side, a symbol of hope amid ownership turmoil, before his acrimonious free-transfer departure in 2021 divided the fanbase. Even so, his emergence extended Milan's tradition of producing and hosting world-class goalkeepers into the modern age.

The Milan Glorie are the club's living museum in motion - a veterans' XI in which Daniele Massaro, Serginho, Costacurta, Massimo Ambrosini and other champions pull the red-and-black back on for charity matches, legends tournaments and reunions against the old guard of Inter, Barcelona and Liverpool. More than nostalgia, the side keeps the bond between eras tangible, raising money for good causes through Fondazione Milan and carrying the club's story to fans who never saw these men in their pomp. When the Glorie take the field the decades collapse, and the grinta of Arrigo's and Fabio's immortals flickers back to life. Una maglia che non si smette mai - a shirt you never truly take off.

Cesare Maldini, Captain of Milan's First European Cup, Passes

Cesare Maldini died on 3 April 2016 in Milan, the city where he had first lifted the European Cup as captain in 1963 at Wembley, the rossoneri's maiden continental crown. A commanding, ball-playing centre-half of Rocco's great side, he won four scudetti in red and black before a long life in coaching, including guiding Italy at the 1998 World Cup. Above all he was the patriarch of a dynasty: father of Paolo and grandfather of Christian, threading three generations of Maldini blood through the club. His death was felt as the loss of Milan's living link to its first golden triumph, and Paolo carried the grief publicly as the family name endured at San Siro.

Alex, Bacca and Niang light up a lean winter

In the grey years between title challenges, Mihajlović's Milan produced one unclouded evening: a 3-0 derby victory over Mancini's title-chasing Inter. The Brazilian centre-back Alex rose to head the opener, Carlos Bacca doubled it, and M'Baye Niang finished the rout as San Siro's red half roared a rare full-throated triumph. The Last Diktat: Two Strikers or Nothing

Berlusconi's final great hands-on intervention came on 12 April 2016, when he sacked Siniša Mihajlović — despite the Serb having steered Milan into the Coppa Italia final — and promoted youth-team coach Cristian Brocchi, a loyal midfielder from his triumphant sides. The president made no secret of the reason: he found the football joyless, and he wanted his Milan attacking again, with two strikers, as he had demanded of coaches throughout his ownership. It was the aging owner's last assertion of the founding creed of his presidency — that Milan existed to entertain — issued barely a year before he sold the club.

2015-16: Donnarumma emerges, Coppa final lost

Sinisa Mihajlovic's season is remembered above all for his boldest call: handing the goalkeeper's jersey to 16-year-old Gianluigi Donnarumma in October 2015. New striker Carlos Bacca scored 18 Serie A goals, but Mihajlovic was dismissed in April and replaced by youth-team coach Cristian Brocchi, with Milan ending the league campaign in seventh place. Milan reached the Coppa Italia final, losing 1-0 to Juventus after extra time through Alvaro Morata's goal.

Coppa Italia Final 2016: Morata Breaks Milan Hearts in Extra Time

On 21 May 2016 at Rome's Stadio Olimpico, a young, Berlusconi-era-ending Milan under Cristian Brocchi pushed the newly-crowned Serie A champions Juventus to the brink of penalties. The match remained goalless deep into extra time until Alvaro Morata, brought on as a substitute, slid in at the far post in the 110th minute to win it 1-0 and secure Juve's second consecutive league-and-cup Double. It was Milan's last act before the Chinese takeover era, a bitter night in which the Rossoneri, roared on by their support, came agonisingly close to denying Massimiliano Allegri's machine.

Montella takes the reins

In June 2016 Vincenzo Montella, the elegant former Roma striker nicknamed 'L'Aeroplanino', was appointed to rebuild Milan around emerging talents like teenage goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma and midfielder Manuel Locatelli. His youthful, attacking side briefly rekindled optimism at San Siro and would soon claim the club's first silverware in years. For a season, the Aeroplanino's Milan dared to fly again.

'The Lord of Milan' — Robert Nieri Rescues Kilpin from Oblivion

In October 2016, a century after Kilpin's death, the Nottingham-born lawyer Robert Nieri published 'The Lord of Milan: The Life and Times of Herbert Kilpin', the first full-length English biography of the club's founder and first captain. Nieri, of Anglo-Italian descent, spent years piecing together fragments from parish records, newspaper cuttings and family recollection to reconstruct a man who had slipped almost entirely from memory in his own homeland. The book reframed Kilpin not as a footnote but as a Victorian pioneer who carried the English game to Lombardy and stayed to become more Milanese than the Milanesi. (The book is a novelised telling of the founder's life rather than a scholarly biography — lore embraced as lore.)

Locatelli stuns Juventus: an academy boy's thunderbolt

Manuel Locatelli, a slight midfielder schooled in the rossonero vivaio, wrote himself into San Siro folklore on 22 October 2016 when a dipping long-range strike beat Gianluigi Buffon to sink the reigning champions Juventus 1-0. Barely eighteen, the homegrown regista wheeled away in disbelief before being mobbed beneath the Curva Sud. For one intoxicating autumn the academy graduate was hailed as the future of the Milan midfield.

Supercoppa Italiana 2016: Milan beat Juventus on penalties in Doha

On 23 December 2016, under the floodlights of the Jassim bin Hamad Stadium in Doha, Montella's young Milan gained sweet revenge on Juventus in the Supercoppa Italiana. Giacomo Bonaventura's header cancelled out Giorgio Chiellini's opener, and after a 1-1 stalemate through extra time the Rossoneri held their nerve to win 4-3 on penalties, the teenage Donnarumma saving Paulo Dybala's spot-kick before Mario Pašalić buried the decisive penalty. It was Milan's first trophy since 2011 and, poignantly, the last piece of silverware won under Berlusconi's presidency. Forza Milan!
