58 matches unbeaten: the invincibili record

For nearly two years Milan simply could not be beaten in Serie A: from late May 1991 until 21 March 1993 the rossoneri went 58 league matches without defeat, a record run in the history of the Italian championship. The streak carried them through the whole of 1991–92 without a single loss — the season that christened them gli invincibili — and was ended only by a 1–0 reverse at Parma. Underpinning the invincibility was a defence that conceded at a trickle, marshalled by libero Franco Baresi and drilled first by Arrigo Sacchi and then perfected under Fabio Capello.

Marcel Desailly, 'the Rock' Italians converted to a midfield 'diga'

Fabio Capello famously converted Marcel Desailly from centre-back into a defensive midfielder, and the Italian press praised the resulting 'diga' (dam / barrier) that shielded the back line. Nicknamed 'the Rock' internationally, Desailly was cast by the Italian press as the complete modern midfielder (muscle and brains), the physical foundation of Capello's 'Invincibili'. His athletic dominance helped Milan crush Barcelona 4-0 in the 1994 European Cup final, a match Italians remember as a masterclass in collective steel.

The Streak Ends at 58: Parma Halts the Invincibles

Milan's record 58-match unbeaten league run finally came to an end in March 1993, when Nevio Scala's ambitious young Parma inflicted the defeat that had eluded the rest of Serie A for nearly two years. The number 58 entered the record books as the longest unbeaten league sequence in Italian football history, a feat born of Sacchi's revolution and sustained through Capello's first title-winning seasons. Gazzetta and Guerin Sportivo devoted lengthy features to the streak's death, marvelling that a side could go almost two full seasons without tasting defeat.

The Anfield Ghosts: Milan and Liverpool's Long Shared Legend

Long before Istanbul and Athens, Milan and Liverpool circled one another as the two most storied clubs of their respective nations, each the standard-bearer of a footballing culture, and their eventual clashes carried the accumulated weight of that shared prestige. Both were clubs of European aristocracy, multiple champions who saw the continental game as their natural stage. When they finally met in finals, the rivalry already felt ancient, freighted with the mutual recognition of equals. The Milan-Liverpool relationship became one of the great transnational rivalries, red against red, each club a mirror of the other's grandeur.

The Champions Return: Milan's 1993 Australian Tour

Milan came back to Australia in 1993, this time as reigning Serie A champions and European royalty under Fabio Capello. They won in Sydney — aided by an own goal from future Socceroo Tony Vidmar — and again on a successive night at Melbourne's Princes Park, where Marco Simone and the record signing Gianluigi Lentini were on the mark. Thirteen years on from the Totonero tour, the rossoneri returned Down Under as one of the finest club sides on earth.

Back-to-Back: The 1992-93 Scudetto

Capello's Milan retained their crown in 1992-93, a second consecutive scudetto and the 13th in the club's history. Even as the historic unbeaten run was snapped in March, the Rossoneri's blend of Dutch masters and rising talents proved too strong for the rest of Serie A. The dynasty rolled on, its grip on the Italian game unshaken.

One Operation Too Many

In the weeks after Munich, van Basten chose the scalpel once more, undergoing a further operation on the ravaged ankle in the desperate hope of saving his career. He would later look back on the relentless cycle of surgeries as the choice that destroyed him: instead of healing, the joint stiffened and the pain became a permanent companion. Milan granted their number nine all the time in the world; the ankle granted him none.

58 Games Unbeaten, Broken at Last by Asprilla

On 21 March 1993, after 58 Serie A matches without defeat — a run spanning nearly two years and three seasons — Milan's record streak finally fell at San Siro. Capello's Invincibili had not lost a league match since May 1991, and for almost an hour the Rossoneri's legendary defence held firm once more before Colombian livewire Faustino Asprilla curled a free-kick beyond Sebastiano Rossi to give Parma a 1-0 win. The goal that killed the streak became one of the most replayed moments of the decade, while the 58-game run itself remains the longest unbeaten streak in Serie A history — a monument no Italian club has since approached.

1993 Champions League Final: Marseille 1-0 Milan

1993 Champions League Final: Marseille 1-0 Milan

Under Fabio Capello, Milan reached the first final of the rebranded Champions League at Munich's Olympiastadion, only to be undone by a single moment: Basile Boli's 43rd-minute header from a corner. Bernard Tapie's Marseille held firm to become the first French club to win the European Cup. The night carried extra poignancy for the Rossoneri, as it proved to be Marco van Basten's final match before a chronic ankle injury ended his career.

Munich 1993: The Unknowing Farewell

Barely half-fit after months of surgery and rehabilitation, van Basten willed himself onto the pitch of Munich's Olympiastadion on 26 May 1993 for the Champions League final against Marseille, chasing a third European crown. The night turned cruel: Basile Boli's header decided the match 1-0 for the French, and a visibly labouring van Basten was withdrawn in the closing minutes. He was 28 years old, and though no one in the stadium could know it, he would never play a competitive match again. Italian football's most elegant executioner had taken his final bow without a farewell.

1992-93: Back-to-back titles, heartbreak in Munich

Reinforced by Jean-Pierre Papin, Dejan Savicevic, Zvonimir Boban and world-record signing Gianluigi Lentini, Capello's Milan retained the scudetto and stretched their all-time Serie A unbeaten record to 58 matches before Parma finally ended it in March 1993. The Champions League final in Munich brought cruel defeat, 0-1 to Marseille via Basile Boli's header — the last competitive match of Marco van Basten's career before his ankle gave way for good. Two seasons into the Capello era, Milan had two titles and zero league defeats until spring.

The Lentini Crash on the Turin Motorway

In the night between 2 and 3 August 1993, barely a year after his world-record move, Gianluigi Lentini's Porsche left the A21 motorway near Villafranca d'Asti and the most expensive footballer on Earth lay in a coma with a fractured skull and a damaged eye. Italy held its breath for two days as fans kept vigil outside the hospital; he survived, and within months returned to a thunderous San Siro ovation. But the searing pace and audacity that had commanded the record fee never fully came back: Lentini stayed at Milan until 1996, part of trophy-winning squads including the 1994 European champions, a courageous shadow of the winger Turin had wept for.

Supercoppa Italiana 1993: Milan 1-0 Torino, in Washington

Milan retained the Supercoppa Italiana in 1993, defeating Torino to continue an unbroken grip on the trophy in the Capello years. The rossoneri were by now serial winners of the season-opener, treating it as the natural first prize of another triumphant campaign. Success here bridged the scudetto glory of one season and the European conquest to come.

The Road to Athens Opens Quietly in Aarau

Milan's 1993-94 European campaign began not with a flourish but with a grind, the holders of the Scudetto edging Swiss champions FC Aarau by a single goal across two legs in the first round. A narrow 1-0 win in Switzerland was followed by a goalless return at San Siro, and the 1-0 aggregate said everything about Capello's Milan: minimal risk, total control, and a back line in front of Sebastiano Rossi that simply refused to concede. Nobody watching at San Siro that night imagined the campaign would end with one of the greatest final performances in the competition's history.

Marcel Desailly Crosses the Battle Line

In November 1993 Milan signed Marcel Desailly from Marseille, the very club that had beaten them in the previous May's European Cup final. Converted by Capello from centre-back into a commanding defensive midfielder, "The Rock" gave the side a fearsome new spine. He would go on to win the Champions League in consecutive seasons with two different clubs, a rare distinction in the game.

Seven Past the Danish Champions

If Aarau had been a labour, the second round against FC København was a demonstration. Milan overwhelmed the Danish champions 6-0 away in the first leg — a result that still ranks among the heaviest European defeats in the Copenhagen club's history — before completing a 7-0 aggregate with a routine 1-0 win at San Siro. The tie showed the other face of Capello's side: parsimonious by instinct, but capable of sudden, merciless ruthlessness when the door was left open.
