Capello Inherits the Dynasty

In the summer of 1991 Arrigo Sacchi departed to take charge of the Italy national team, and the Rossoneri turned to Fabio Capello, a former Milan midfielder of the 1970s stepping up from within the club. Handed a squad still crowned by the Dutch trio of Gullit, Rijkaard and Van Basten, Capello's task was not to build greatness but to sustain it. He would answer with four scudetti in five seasons and a European crown. Forza Milan.

Zvonimir Boban, the Croatian Maestro

Zvonimir Boban, the Croatian Maestro

Milan had bought Zvonimir Boban from Dinamo Zagreb in 1991, gambling on a playmaker who had served a lengthy suspension for kicking a policeman while defending a fan during the infamous Maksimir riot of May 1990 — an act that made him a national symbol in Croatia. With the foreigner slots full, he was parked on loan at Bari for a season before finally pulling on the rossonero shirt in the summer of 1992. The patience was repaid tenfold: Boban gave Milan nearly a decade of elegance and fire, starting the 1994 Champions League final demolition of Barcelona and winning four scudetti before his farewell in 2001.

Pressing: Milan's golden decade on the owner's own airwaves

Berlusconi's Italia 1 answered RAI's Sunday monopoly with Pressing, a late-night highlights and debate show fronted by the impeccably dry Raimondo Vianello. The irony was delicious and entirely of its era: Milan's president owned the network that replayed his team's triumphs, and the programme's run tracked almost exactly the years of Capello's invincibili and Milan's mid-nineties Champions League finals. Vianello's deadpan wit made Pressing the sophisticated counterpoint to Biscardi's shouting — Berlusconian television narrating Berlusconian football.

The Club and the Cameras Become One

Milan's on-field dominance was inseparable from the television empire that bankrolled it: Berlusconi's Fininvest networks — Canale 5, Italia 1 and Rete 4 — turned the Rossoneri into content, saturating Italian screens with the club's triumphs and the glamour of its stars. Then, in 1991, the launch of Telepiù's encrypted channels opened Italy's pay-television era, and Milan — Berlusconi's club and Capello's emerging Invincibles — sat at the commercial heart of the new landscape of live, subscription football. The man who owned the cameras was also the man who owned the champions, fusing football, advertising and media into a single self-reinforcing machine. The shift gradually moved the match-day experience from communal radio and free-to-air highlights toward a paid, image-driven product — the transition from the age of 'Tutto il calcio' as the primary medium to television as the arena where Milan's story would principally be seen. Never before had a club and a broadcaster been so seamlessly, and so profitably, one.

Gunnar Gren Dies, the Last Professore of Gre-No-Li

Gunnar Gren, the elegant inside-forward whose surname supplied the first syllable of the legendary Gre-No-Li trident, died in Gothenburg in 1991. Nicknamed Il Professore for his unhurried intelligence and vision, Gren arrived with his Swedish compatriots after their 1948 Olympic gold and helped Milan capture the 1951 scudetto, the club's first title in over four decades. Where Nordahl bludgeoned and Liedholm orchestrated, Gren threaded the passes and dictated tempo with a scholar's calm. His death severed one more thread binding Milan to the golden Swedish dawn that reawakened the rossoneri after the war.

UEFA's verdict: forfeit and European exile

Milan returned from Marseille hoping UEFA would order the abandoned quarter-final replayed; instead the disciplinary authorities handed Marseille a 3-0 forfeit victory and shut the rossoneri out of European competition for a full season. The two-time reigning champions of Europe were thus dethroned at a desk rather than on the pitch. The exile would keep Capello's unbeaten 1991-92 side out of the UEFA Cup, compounding the cost of that night at the Velodrome.

First leg stalemate with Tapie's Marseille

Two-time reigning European champions, Sacchi's Milan opened their European Cup quarter-final against Bernard Tapie's lavishly assembled Marseille with a tense 1-1 draw at San Siro. Ruud Gullit and Jean-Pierre Papin traded goals in a meeting of the continent's two glamour squads, leaving the tie perfectly poised for the return at the Velodrome. Nobody at San Siro that night could have imagined how the second leg would end.

The night the lights went out in Marseille

The night the lights went out in Marseille

With Milan trailing 1-0 to Chris Waddle's second-half goal and the tie slipping away, a bank of the Velodrome floodlights failed with barely two minutes remaining. Swedish referee Bo Karlsson halted play, and though power was soon restored, director Adriano Galliani ordered the rossoneri off the pitch and refused to let them resume, gambling that UEFA would order a replay. Instead UEFA awarded Marseille a 3-0 win and banned Milan from European competition for the following season - a self-inflicted disgrace that ended the Sacchi era's European reign not with a defeat, but with a walk-off.

Serie A 1990-91

1990-91: Sacchi's farewell and the Marseille blackout

Arrigo Sacchi's final season brought a Serie A runners-up finish behind Sampdoria's only scudetto, plus silverware in the Intercontinental Cup (3-0 over Olimpia Asuncion in Tokyo) and the European Super Cup against Sampdoria. The European Cup defence ended in infamy at the Velodrome: when the floodlights failed against Marseille, Milan refused to resume play, were awarded a 0-3 defeat and banned from European competition for a year. Sacchi departed in the summer, closing the most revolutionary coaching tenure in the club's history.

The Trofeo Luigi Berlusconi Is Born

On 23 August 1991 Silvio Berlusconi inaugurated a pre-season trophy at San Siro in memory of his father, Luigi Berlusconi, conceiving it as a late-August showcase between Milan and Europe's great champions. Fittingly grand and a touch cruel, the very first edition went to Juventus, 2-1 before some 63,000 spectators; but the Rossoneri answered by sweeping the next three, beating Internazionale 1-0 (1992), Real Madrid 3-2 (1993) and Bayern Munchen 1-0 (1994). The 'Berlusconi' swiftly became the most anticipated amichevole (friendly) of the Italian summer, a dress rehearsal staged before packed houses. It framed the campaigns of the Sacchi-Capello golden age with a glittering curtain-raiser.

The 58-Match Unbeaten League Run Begins

Milan set a record that would define an epoch: an unbeaten Serie A run stretching to 58 consecutive matches, beginning in the spring of 1991 and running through to the spring of 1993. The streak spanned the entire 1991-92 season, in which Milan won the scudetto without losing a single game, an invincible campaign of thirty-four matches. Chronicled week by week on Tutto il calcio minuto per minuto, the run became the benchmark for Italian football's longest unbeaten sequence, a testament to the machine Arrigo Sacchi built and Capello perfected.
