Arrigo Sacchi Takes Charge

Arrigo Sacchi Takes Charge

In the summer of 1987 Silvio Berlusconi made his most audacious gamble, entrusting his revolution to an unlikely prophet: Arrigo Sacchi, a former shoe salesman with no professional playing career whose unfancied Parma had twice embarrassed Milan in the Coppa Italia. When critics sneered that a man who had never been a great player could not command great players, Sacchi delivered the immortal riposte: 'I never realised that to be a jockey you had to have been a horse first.' Armed with a fanatical belief in high pressing, a compact back four and zonal marking, he would tear up Italian football's cautious catenaccio orthodoxy. The professore had arrived to reinvent the game.

Il calcio secondo me — the gospel written down

Arrigo Sacchi's footballing creed, later distilled under the title 'Il calcio secondo me' (Football According to Me), rested on a single heretical insistence for Italian football: that Milan should attack and defend as a single organism, never as eleven individuals. He preached that the reparti (units) — difesa, centrocampo and attacco (defence, midfield and attack) — should slide across the pitch in unison, never more than 25-30 metres separating the last defender from the centre-forward. Against the entrenched Italian faith in catenaccio (the ultra-defensive 'door-bolt' system) and the libero (sweeper), Sacchi's proposition that a team could dominate territory rather than merely absorb pressure was, in his own phrasing, a demand to play 'da protagonisti' (as protagonists), not spectators of the opponent.

La palla deve correre più dell'uomo — let the ball do the running

The maxim at the heart of Sacchi's teaching was 'è la palla che deve correre, non l'uomo' (it is the ball that must run, not the man). Where Italian tradition prized individual dribbling and the fantasista (the fantasy playmaker), Sacchi held that a ball moved with two touches at speed travels faster and tires no one, so that circulation of the pass — not the sprint of the carrier — should govern the game. Positional discipline freed the players to think collectively: possession was to be a means of controlling space and rhythm, never mere ornament. It was, as he framed it in Italian, a football of ideas before athletics — 'prima la testa, poi le gambe' (first the head, then the legs).

The Pressing Revolution: Sacchi's Zonal 4-4-2

Arrigo Sacchi took charge in 1987 and detonated Italian orthodoxy, discarding man-marking and the deep-lying libero for a zonal 4-4-2 built on collective movement. Inspired by the Dutch Total Football of Rinus Michels, his Milan pressed relentlessly to suffocate opponents high up the pitch, held a daring synchronised offside trap and compressed the entire team into barely twenty-five metres between the last defender and the first attacker, its four horizontal units — the 'reparti' — sliding as one so that the ball, not the opponent, dictated every position. The choreography was drilled through shadow-play sessions against imaginary opponents. Fuelled by the Dutch trio Gullit, Van Basten and Rijkaard and marshalled by the Baresi-Maldini spine, the side won the 1988 scudetto and back-to-back European Cups in 1989 and 1990. Sacchi insisted a well-drilled collective could beat any assembly of individuals, and his synchronised pressing redefined how the world imagined defending — a philosophy that reshaped modern football.

Marco van Basten Arrives from Ajax

Weeks after Gullit, Milan completed the second pillar of their Dutch masterpiece, signing the elegant Ajax striker Marco van Basten, already a European Golden Boot winner and one of the most gifted centre-forwards alive. A cruel ankle injury restricted him to a handful of appearances in his debut 1987-88 campaign, yet he still rose from the bench to strike at Napoli on the very day the title turned. Alongside Gullit, and soon Frank Rijkaard, he would form the Dutch trinity that carried Sacchi's Milan to the summit of Europe; within a year 'San Marco', il Cigno di Utrecht, would be the finest centre-forward on earth.

'Il Cigno di Utrecht' e 'il Tulipano Nero'

The Italian press gilded Arrigo Sacchi's Dutchmen with operatic epithets: Marco van Basten became il Cigno di Utrecht (the Swan of Utrecht) for the impossible grace of his volleys, and Ruud Gullit il Tulipano Nero (the Black Tulip), after the Dumas novel. Such naming was its own art form in Guerin Sportivo and La Gazzetta, transfiguring foreign stars into Italian mythology. To be rebaptised by the Italian sporting tongue was to be truly consecrated.

From Fantasista to Palazzo — Rivera the Statesman

After football Rivera traded the number ten for the halls of power: elected to the Camera dei Deputati (Chamber of Deputies) from 1987, he served several legislatures and rose to Sottosegretario alla Difesa (Undersecretary of Defence), later sitting as a member of the European Parliament. Articulate and combative — the same qualities that had made him a thorn to federations and press as a player — he became one of the few campioni to build a serious second life in public office. His rapport with the Berlusconi-era club stayed cool, and the eternal rossonero left his later mark instead in Rome and Brussels.

Sacchi: 'per essere un fantino non serve essere stato un cavallo'

Mocked as a former shoe salesman who had never played the professional game, Arrigo Sacchi answered with a line that entered the Italian language: 'Non ho mai pensato che per essere un buon fantino bisognasse prima essere stato un cavallo' (I never thought that to be a good jockey you first had to have been a horse). It became the manifesto of the coach-as-thinker — the conviction that football is understood, not merely lived. Sacchi's Milan then proved the aphorism true on the grandest stages of Europe.

Espanyol end Sacchi's first European campaign

Arrigo Sacchi's first taste of Europe as Milan coach came in the 1987-88 UEFA Cup and it was over quickly: Javier Clemente's Espanyol beat the rossoneri over two legs in the autumn, then rode their momentum to the final itself, where only a penalty shoot-out against Bayer Leverkusen denied them the trophy. Freed of midweek distractions, Sacchi's Milan poured everything into Serie A — the scudetto that followed opened the gate to the European Cup and immortality.

Ruud Gullit and the World-Record Fee

Ruud Gullit and the World-Record Fee

Milan agreed a world-record fee of around 18 million Dutch guilders — around £6 million, or some 13 billion lire (about £6 million) to prise the dreadlocked, all-conquering Ruud Gullit from PSV Eindhoven, eclipsing the record Napoli had set for Diego Maradona. A powerhouse who could play anywhere across midfield and attack, he announced himself with a headed goal in a 3-1 opening-day win away at Pisa, and in December 1987 was crowned Ballon d'Or winner in his first season in rossonero, dedicating the golden ball to the then-imprisoned Nelson Mandela. In il Tulipano, Berlusconi and Sacchi had the gleaming emblem and beating heart of their revolution.

1986-87: Virdis fires Milan back into Europe

In Berlusconi's first full season Milan finished fifth under Liedholm, with Fabio Capello stepping in as caretaker for the final weeks, and secured a UEFA Cup place by beating Sampdoria in an end-of-season playoff. Pietro Paolo Virdis won the capocannoniere crown with 17 Serie A goals, the club's first top-scorer title in years. A Coppa Italia elimination at the hands of Arrigo Sacchi's provincial Parma so impressed Berlusconi that he hired the unknown coach that summer — the most consequential appointment in Milan history.

Record spending builds the grande Milan

To build the grande Milan, Berlusconi spent as no Italian owner ever had: in June 1987 he brought Ruud Gullit from PSV Eindhoven for one of the largest fees the game had yet seen, around eighteen billion lire, pairing him days later with the young Ajax striker Marco van Basten. The dreadlocked Dutchman's arrival, soon completed by Frank Rijkaard, gave Milan the most expensive and most brilliant attacking core in the world. It was record-breaking outlay as a statement of intent — proof that Fininvest money would buy not merely players but an era.

Ruud Gullit, 1987 Ballon d'Or

Barely months after his world-record move from PSV Eindhoven, Ruud Gullit was named 1987 European Footballer of the Year, the dreadlocked embodiment of Arrigo Sacchi's new red-and-black project. On receiving the Ballon d'Or he dedicated it to the then-imprisoned Nelson Mandela, an act of political conscience rare in the football of its day. It announced that Milan had signed not merely a great player but one of the defining figures of the age.
