Franco Baresi and Paolo Maldini — the settore giovanile's greatest yield

Franco Baresi and Paolo Maldini — the settore giovanile's greatest yield

The club's youth academy at the Vismara produced its two supreme monuments: Franco Baresi, who rose through the ranks to debut in the late 1970s, and Paolo Maldini, a Milanello product who made his first-team bow in January 1985 at just sixteen. Both would give the club decades of one-club loyalty, and both are the ultimate advertisement for the settore giovanile's philosophy of forming men as well as footballers. Their emergence proved the academy could grow captains, not merely players.

Autumn 1985

Waregem and the bottom of the valley

In the autumn of 1985 a Milan side featuring Ray Wilkins and Mark Hateley was knocked out of the UEFA Cup by KSV Waregem, a Belgian provincial club that improbably carried on all the way to that season's semi-finals. Landing amid the financial wreckage of the Farina presidency, the elimination sharpened the sense of a great institution scraping bottom. Within months Silvio Berlusconi would arrive to buy the club and rewrite everything.

1985

Sampdoria's First Trophy, at Milan's Expense

The two-legged final of the 1984-85 Coppa Italia announced a new force in Italian football. Paolo Mantovani's young Sampdoria of Vialli and Mancini beat Milan 1-0 at Marassi and 2-1 at San Siro, taking the cup 3-1 on aggregate — the first major honour in the Genoese club's history. For a Milan still climbing back from the shadows of the 1980 Totonero scandal, relegation and the Serie B years — Nils Liedholm's rebuilding side, in the seasons before Silvio Berlusconi rescued the club — it was a painful measure of how far there was still to travel.

20 January 1985

A Boy Named Maldini: The Debut of a Golden Generation

On 20 January 1985, against Udinese, Nils Liedholm sent on a sixteen-year-old full-back from the youth ranks to replace the injured Sergio Battistini. His name was Paolo Maldini, son of former Milan captain Cesare, and Milan history turned a page few noticed at the time. From the ashes of the Serie B years, it was the first note of the academy's greatest symphony. That same youth sector produced Alessandro Costacurta, hardened by a loan at Monza before becoming a pillar of the defence, and midfielder Demetrio Albertini, polished on loan at Padova before running Capello's midfield. Together with Baresi, these home-grown players formed the spine of the sides that conquered Europe under Sacchi, Capello and Ancelotti. Maldini himself would play twenty-five seasons and over 900 matches, all in the sacred red and black, lifting five European Cups along the way — the club's greatest one-club servant, and the ultimate argument for the youth pipeline. Bandiera eterna.

1984-85: Hateley's derby leap and a boy named Maldini

Nils Liedholm returned to the bench and guided Milan to fifth place and a UEFA Cup berth, with English signings Mark Hateley and Ray Wilkins restoring pride — Hateley's towering derby header over Collovati in the 2-1 win against Inter in October 1984 became instant iconography. In January 1985 a 16-year-old Paolo Maldini made his Serie A debut against Udinese, beginning the longest one-club career in Milan history. The season ended with defeat to Sampdoria in the Coppa Italia final, the Genoese club's first major trophy.

Supertifo: The Curva Gets Its Own Magazine

In 1985 Supertifo appeared on Italian newsstands, first as a supplement to Tuttocalcio and soon as an independent magazine under founding editor Nicola Nucci — the first national publication devoted entirely to the world of the ultras. Its pages of curva photography, choreography reports, group interviews and letters between rival tifoserie turned terrace culture into something fans collected and studied, and Milan's Curva Sud, home of the Fossa dei Leoni, was among its recurring subjects. For milanisti far from San Siro, Supertifo offered a regular window onto what the Sud had sung, staged and unfurled. The magazine outlived the print era as a social-media presence and in 2026 announced a return to newsstands after more than a decade away — testimony to the durability of the culture it chronicled.
