Brera publishes 'Storia critica del calcio italiano'

Gianni Brera, the Lombard giornalista who invented much of Italian football's vocabulary, publishes his magnum opus with Bompiani: a sweeping, opinionated history of the national game. Milan runs through its pages like a red-and-black thread — the friendship with Nereo Rocco, the defence-first creed Brera championed as Italy's natural style, and his running polemic with Gianni Rivera, the golden boy he had famously diminished with the nickname 'abatino'. Half a century on, no serious history of the rossoneri is written without arguing with Brera first.

Coining the football body: 'contropiedista' and the theory of the race

Brera built an entire quasi-scientific anthropology of the game, arguing that the undernourished history of the Italian people had bred quick, wiry *contropiedisti* (counter-attackers) rather than powerful runners — a theory he pressed relentlessly against Milan's attacking romantics. Though later much disputed, his idea that tactics must bend to physique gave Italian *catenaccio* an intellectual pedigree. Even his critics wrote in the vocabulary he had invented to argue with him.

Player and Vice-President — the Rebel in the Boardroom

Rivera's independence made him more than a footballer at Milan: in 1975, still an active player, he took a seat as club vice-president, an almost unheard-of dual role. It followed stormy years in which coaches such as Gustavo Giagnoni dared to bench the capitano, provoking uproar among the tifosi who saw Rivera as the very soul of the club. Outspoken with the federation and unafraid of Milan's directors, he embodied the player as intellectual and power-broker long before it was fashionable.

Autumn 1975

UEFA Cup debut: Everton shut out

Milan's first UEFA Cup campaign opened against Everton in the autumn of 1975, and the tie was a study in catenaccio economics: a goalless stalemate at Goodison Park, then a single Milan goal at San Siro to settle it. The English side left aggrieved, Milan advanced without conceding — a quietly efficient start to a competition that would soon produce far stranger nights.

Fiorentina Snatch a Five-Goal Final

In a breathless final at the Stadio Olimpico in Rome, Fiorentina edged Milan 3-2 to take the 1974-75 Coppa Italia. Five goals could not disguise the rossoneri's frustration: in the grey years between European triumphs, another trophy had slipped through their fingers by the finest of margins.

10 March 1975

Pirates of the Ether: Radio Milano International and the Radio Libere

On 10 March 1975, from an apartment in via Locatelli, four Milanese in their early twenties — brothers Angelo and Rino Borra and Piero and Nino Cozzi — switched on Radio Milano International at 101 MHz, generally regarded as Italy's first radio libera; the opening record was Barry White's 'Love's Theme'. Police sequestered the transmitter that April, but a Milan magistrate ordered the equipment returned, and on 28 July 1976 the Constitutional Court legalised local broadcasting altogether, unleashing the free-radio boom. Within a few seasons the Milanese ether was crowded with private stations, and for rossoneri supporters local radio offered what RAI's single national voice never had: phone-ins, fan argument and hyper-local match talk in Milanese accents, stretching the matchday conversation across the whole week. The revolution born in a Milan apartment rewired how the city's fans talked about their football.

1974-75: Fifth place and a cup final defeat

Under Gustavo Giagnoni — with the ageing Nereo Rocco returning to the bench late in the season — Milan finished in the upper reaches of the table, around fifth, well adrift of champions Juventus. The season's best chance of silverware slipped away in the Coppa Italia final, where Fiorentina beat the rossoneri 3-2. Rivera remained captain and talisman of a team in transition.

October 1975

The afternoon Athlone Town held Milan

St Mel's Park, October 1975: Athlone Town, Irish part-timers from the banks of the Shannon, held mighty Milan to a goalless draw in the UEFA Cup second round — and very nearly won, Enrico Albertosi diving to save John Minnock's penalty. Milan settled the tie 3-0 back at San Siro, but the first leg endures as one of the most cherished days in League of Ireland history, the day the rossoneri came to the Irish midlands and could not score.

Brigate Rossonere and the Militant '70s

Founded in 1975, the Brigate Rossonere took their name from the martial vocabulary of Italy's 'anni di piombo,' when curve across the peninsula adopted labels like Brigate, Commandos and Fedayn. Sharing the Curva Sud with the older Fossa dei Leoni, they thickened the rossonero tifo into a forest of flags and smoke, their banner a fixture of San Siro Sundays. The two souls of the south end — veteran Fossa and younger Brigate — carried Milan through the lean Serie B seasons and into the Berlusconi renaissance. The group unfurled its first banner away at Bologna on 19 October 1975.
