The shadow of referee Michas

Greek referee Christos Michas waved away a string of Leeds appeals — including what looked like clear penalties — and by full-time the Thessaloniki crowd was cheering the beaten English side and whistling the champions through their lap of honour. Michas never took charge of another international fixture and was later suspended amid match-fixing allegations, though nothing concerning the final itself was ever proven. Decades on, Leeds supporters formally petitioned UEFA to re-examine the result; the record — Milan 1, Leeds United 0 — has never changed.

1973 Cup Winners' Cup Final: Milan 1-0 Leeds United

In the Kaftanzoglio Stadium of Thessaloniki, Milan edged Leeds United 1-0 to claim the European Cup Winners' Cup for the second time — the first club ever to win the trophy twice, five years after Kurt Hamrin's brace had beaten Hamburg in Rotterdam. Luciano Chiarugi's fifth-minute free-kick proved decisive, and Nereo Rocco's rossoneri clung to the lead through a night forever stained by the officiating of Greek referee Christos Michas, later banned for life by UEFA and convicted of corruption in a Greek court. Sensing injustice, the Greek crowd pelted Milan's lap of honour with missiles, yet the cup went home to Milano. It was the fourth European trophy of the Rocco era — and its last: four days later the scudetto slipped away on a fatal afternoon in Verona, and the great cycle quietly closed. Forza Milan.

La Fatal Verona: The Scudetto Lost on the Last Day

La Fatal Verona: The Scudetto Lost on the Last Day

On the final afternoon of 1972-73, Milan travelled to the Bentegodi sitting on top of the table, four days after lifting the Cup Winners' Cup against Leeds in Salonika, needing only to hold their nerve to claim the scudetto of the star. Instead, an exhausted side collapsed 5-3 to Hellas Verona while Juventus won late in Rome to snatch the title by a single point. The phrase 'fatal Verona' passed instantly into Italian football's vocabulary, shorthand for the cruellest last-day heartbreak the game can inflict.

— MATCH SHEET — Coach: Nereo Rocco Rivera's Milan arrived at the Bentegodi top of the table, four days after lifting the Cup Winners' Cup against Leeds in Thessaloniki; the 5-3 collapse, with Juventus winning in Rome, handed the scudetto away by a single point.

1972-73: Fatale Verona — a scudetto lost, two cups won

Milan travelled to Verona on the final day, 20 May 1973, needing only to avoid defeat to claim the title, but collapsed 5-3 while Juventus won at Roma to steal the scudetto by a single point — 'Fatale Verona' entered the club's lexicon forever. The heartbreak came days after glory: Milan won the Cup Winners' Cup, beating Leeds United 1-0 in Thessaloniki through Luciano Chiarugi, and later that summer retained the Coppa Italia against Juventus. Gianni Rivera shared the Serie A capocannoniere title with 17 goals, a rare feat for a midfielder.

Coppa Italia 1972-73: Penalties Over Juventus

There was consolation in Rome, where Milan and Juventus could not be separated after 120 minutes, the final locked at 1-1 with Romeo Benetti's penalty answering Roberto Bettega's opener. From the spot Milan held their nerve to win the shootout 5-2 and lift a third Coppa Italia — and a second in successive seasons, retaining the trophy won in 1971-72. Back-to-back triumphs underlined how effective Milan had become in the tournament's knockout format, a small balm on the wound of the Fatal Verona just weeks earlier.

Filippo Inzaghi is born in Piacenza

Filippo Inzaghi is born in Piacenza

Filippo 'Pippo' Inzaghi was born on 9 August 1973 in Piacenza, destined to become one of the sharpest goal-poachers of his generation. Arriving from Juventus in 2001, he lived permanently on the last shoulder of the last defender, a predator who seemed to be born offside yet somehow always onside. His two goals against Liverpool in the 2007 Champions League final in Athens delivered Milan's sweet revenge for Istanbul.
