Serie A / Intercontinental Cup 1969-70

1969-70: Champions of the world in the Battle of Buenos Aires

Milan won the Intercontinental Cup for the first time, beating Estudiantes 3-0 at San Siro before surviving a notoriously violent 1-2 return leg in Buenos Aires in which Néstor Combin and Prati were brutalised. In December Gianni Rivera won the Ballon d'Or, the first Italian-born player so honoured, but the league brought only a fourth-place finish behind Gigi Riva's historic Cagliari, and the European Cup defence ended against eventual winners Feyenoord.

La Staffetta: Rivera, Mazzola and the Six Minutes of Mexico

For the 1970 final against Pele's Brazil, commissario tecnico Ferruccio Valcareggi honoured his rigid 'staffetta', the relay that split the No. 10 shirt between Inter's Sandro Mazzola and Milan's Gianni Rivera. Rivera, a Ballon d'Or winner, was left on the bench and granted barely six minutes as Brazil ran out 4-1 winners. The snub scandalised Italy and became one of calcio's enduring debates: how could its most gifted playmaker be reduced to a cameo in a World Cup final? For rossoneri it crystallised Rivera as the misunderstood 'abatino', the little abbot, too elegant for the pragmatists, a barb coined by Gianni Brera.

Cafu is born in Sao Paulo

Cafu is born in Sao Paulo

Marcos Evangelista de Morais, immortalised as Cafu, was born on 7 June 1970 in a working-class quarter of Sao Paulo, Brazil. The tireless right-back arrived at Milan in 2003 fresh from lifting the 2002 World Cup as Brazil's captain, the only man to appear in three consecutive World Cup finals. At San Siro his relentless overlapping runs helped bring the 2004 Scudetto and the 2007 Champions League to the Rossoneri.

Rivera, the Golden Boy, and the Partita del Secolo

On 17 June 1970, in the thin air of Mexico City's Estadio Azteca, Italy and West Germany produced football's most operatic afternoon — five of the seven goals arriving in extra time after Karl-Heinz Schnellinger's last-gasp equaliser. Milan's Gianni Rivera — the elegant playmaker Gianni Brera dubbed l'abatino, "the little abbot", and in 1969 the first Italian-born winner of the Ballon d'Or — was the jewel Milan gave the Azzurri, though coach Ferruccio Valcareggi rationed him and Sandro Mazzola through the notorious staffetta, the "relay". Barely a minute after Gerd Müller had levelled, the reigning Pallone d'Oro lashed home the decisive 4-3, sending Italy to the final. His reward there was a bitter six minutes as Brazil ran out 4-1 winners, a slight that scarred Italian football's conscience for years. The Mexicans loved the semi-final so much they later fixed a plaque at the Azteca reading "El Partido del Siglo" — the Match of the Century, the stage on which Rivera's golden-boy genius met the world.

'90º minuto': Sunday Evening Goals Become a Ritual

On 27 September 1970 RAI launched 90º minuto, the breathless early-evening round-up presented by the unflappable Paolo Valenti, and for the first time Italians across the whole peninsula could watch the day's Serie A goals on television within hours of the final whistle. Sunday at 18:00 became a national appointment, and the Italian Sunday assumed its classic three-act liturgy: live radio commentary in the afternoon — at San Siro or over the transistor — then 90º minuto before dinner, and La Domenica Sportiva late at night. For Milan families the programme completed the rite: a goal only heard on the radio, or imagined from a scoreline, finally acquired a shape in a few precious seconds of film — the first weekly sight of what Rivera, and later Van Basten, had actually done that afternoon, replayed on the family television before supper. The goals were beamed in by a colourful corps of eccentric provincial stadium correspondents whose faces became as familiar as the players'. Valenti anchored the broadcast for two decades, braiding radio and television into a single national liturgy of the Sunday result, and its jingle still summons Sunday evenings for anyone raised in that era.
