c. 1960

Entrusted with the azzurri

Such was his prestige that around 1960 the *Federazione* (the Italian football federation) entrusted Viani with the *Nazionale* itself, handing *il Vate* the *azzurri* (the blues, Italy's national side) during a fraught transitional period for the national team. The spell proved brief and troubled, cut short in part by his frail health, but it confirmed his standing as one of the most respected Italian tactical brains of the age.

The Golden Boy Arrives: Gianni Rivera Signs for Milan

The Golden Boy Arrives: Gianni Rivera Signs for Milan

In the summer of 1960 Milan brought the sixteen-year-old Rivera to the big city, first through a comproprietà (co-ownership) with Alessandria before taking him outright — a deal whose cost made front pages across Italy and drew grumbles that Milan had spent a fortune on a ragazzino (a mere boy). Within two seasons the boy was orchestrating the 1962 scudetto under Nereo Rocco. He would never wear another club's shirt, becoming Milan's eternal bandiera (flag) across nineteen seasons.

'Casciavit' contro 'bauscia' — the two souls of Milano

In Milanese dialect the rossoneri were long the casciavit (screwdrivers) — the operai, the factory hands and southern immigrants of the industrial city, who wore the calloused hand as a coat of arms — while Inter's nerazzurri were the bauscia, dialect for the swaggering, well-to-do braggart (literally one who sprays spit while boasting). The divide traced back to Inter's founding by more cosmopolitan, affluent members, and though post-war Milan blurred the sociology, the folklore only hardened into identity. To call yourself a casciavit was to claim the working city as your birthright.

A new vocabulary for calcio: libero, centrocampista, contropiede

Brera did not merely report football, he named it: to him are credited or popularised *libero* (the free sweeper), *centrocampista* (midfielder), *goleador* (goal-scorer), *melina* (the art of killing time by keeping possession), *contropiede* (the counter-attack) and *pretattica* (the pre-match psychological game). His prose fused Lombard dialect, Latin and invented compounds into a style so distinctive it was called *breriano*. Much of the everyday Italian in which Milan's history is still narrated was, quite literally, written by him.

The shield we know: cross, stripes and a metallic rim

Around 1960 the emblem assumed the upright form still recognisable today — the Ambrosian red cross beside the rossonero stripes, ringed by a metallic border. The earliest of these wore a silver rim and spelled out the full name MILAN across the shield; through the following years the rim turned gold and the lettering was pared back to the terse ACM. It is the direct ancestor of every crest the Diavolo has worn since.

Following Milan by Shortwave: The Emigrant's Sunday Ritual

For the hundreds of thousands of Italians who emigrated after the war — to Australia, the Americas and northern Europe — following Milan meant improvisation. Italian-language newspapers founded in the new countries, such as La Fiamma in Sydney (from 1947) and Il Globo in Melbourne (from 1959), carried Serie A results and match reports for readers who might otherwise wait weeks for news from home. RAI's shortwave service for Italians abroad beamed Sunday football across the oceans, which in Australia meant huddling around a crackling radio late on Sunday night as the matches kicked off in distant Italian afternoons. Out of these rituals grew the network of Milan supporters' clubs abroad — communities built not on attending San Siro but on newsprint that arrived days late and voices that arrived through static.

Transistor Sundays: 'Tutto il calcio minuto per minuto' is born

At 15:15 on Sunday 10 January 1960 RAI launched 'Tutto il calcio minuto per minuto', the revolutionary programme that taught Italy to follow football by ear — and one of its inaugural collegamenti (live hook-ups from the grounds) came from San Siro, where Nicolò Carosio narrated Milan-Juventus. Conceived by Guglielmo Moretti with Sergio Zavoli and anchored from the Milan studio by Roberto Bortoluzzi, the show cut live between stadiums so listeners heard goals the instant they were scored. From that day the fortunes of the Rossoneri were carried into millions of homes through the roving voices of the radiocronisti — the urgent tenor of Enrico Ameri, the unmistakable gravel rasp of Sandro Ciotti, the breathless 'scusa Ameri, scusa Ciotti' hand-offs. Long before saturation television, Rocco's scudetti and Rivera's inventions travelled the peninsula as pure sound, ears pressed to transistor radios in kitchens, cars and even the terraces of San Siro itself. For generations of milanisti who could not attend, this theatre of the mind — the crackle, the collegamenti — was the pulse of the season, the soundtrack of the Italian Sunday afternoon through which they first learned to love Milan.

Mauro Tassotti is Born in Rome

On 19 January 1960, Mauro Tassotti was born in Rome, the man who would anchor the right flank of arguably the finest defence football has ever seen. Signed from Lazio in 1980, he gave Milan seventeen years of unbroken service, forming with Baresi, Costacurta and Maldini a back four of almost mythical solidity under Sacchi and Capello. Reliable, tireless and tactically flawless, he collected multiple Scudetti and European Cups before segueing seamlessly into a long career as a trusted assistant coach at the club. A true rossonero servant.

Franco Baresi is Born in Travagliato

Franco Baresi is Born in Travagliato

On 8 May 1960, Franchino "Franco" Baresi was born in Travagliato, near Brescia, the future emperor of the Milan defence. Famously rejected as a boy by Inter, who instead took his brother Giuseppe, he was embraced by Milan's youth system and would become the greatest libero of his generation. Across twenty seasons and 719 appearances he never once betrayed the cause, staying loyal even through the club's darkest Serie B years, and captaining the Sacchi and Capello dynasties to six Scudetti and three European Cups. Milan retired his No. 6 shirt, a fitting tribute to "il Capitano".

1959-60: Third as a golden decade closes

The champions could not repeat, finishing third behind Juventus and Fiorentina in Bonizzoni's second season, while their European Cup campaign was ended early by Barcelona. The decade of Gre-No-Li closed with four scudetti banked — and the summer of 1960 brought a sixteen-year-old from Alessandria named Gianni Rivera, herald of the era to come.
