Gunnar Nordahl: Il Pompiere and the Scoring Record That Endures

Gunnar Nordahl, the Swedish fireman nicknamed 'Il Pompiere,' remains AC Milan's all-time top scorer in Serie A, having plundered more than 200 league goals across his years at the club in the early 1950s. He topped the Serie A capocannoniere charts an astonishing number of times, his ratio of goals to games among the finest the Italian league has ever witnessed. Half a century of great strikers, from Van Basten to Shevchenko to Ibrahimovic, have followed without erasing the total the Gre-No-Li trio's spearhead set, a record chronicled reverently in Guerin Sportivo's histories of Italy's foreign goal-kings.

Juan Alberto Schiaffino — 'Pepe', the Maracanazo maestro

Juan Alberto Schiaffino — 'Pepe', the Maracanazo maestro

The Uruguayan fantasista (creative forward) who had silenced the Maracanã in the decisive 1950 World Cup match arrived at Milan in 1954 for what was then a world-record fee, and to Italians he was known simply as 'Pepe'. Slight of frame yet imperious in mind, he was celebrated in the Italian press as a pure regista (deep-lying playmaker) — the elegant brain who orchestrated the rossoneri attack. Gazzetta writers marvelled that a body so frail could command a match so completely.

La Gazzetta's rosa pages and the language of the scudetto

La Gazzetta dello Sport, printed since 1899 on its distinctive "carta rosa" (pink paper), long set the vocabulary through which Italy read Milan's triumphs. In the Gre-No-Li years the paper popularised the affectionate framing of the Swedish trident and lent the everyday lexicon — "scudetto", "rossoneri", "il Diavolo" (the Devil) — the ceremonial weight of headline type. To win a title in Italy was, in Gazzetta's phrasing, to have one's name written "in rosa" (in pink), and Milan's championships of the era were consecrated in exactly that idiom.

Lorenzo Buffon: the Gre-No-Li era's cultured last line

Lorenzo Buffon guarded the Milan goal through the Gre-No-Li golden age, a stylish, brave keeper who anchored the scudetti of 1951, 1955, 1957 and 1959. A distant relative of the family that would later produce Gianluigi Buffon, he combined agility with a commanding presence in an era before goalkeepers routinely wore gloves. His long service behind the Swedish trident of Gren, Nordahl and Liedholm made him one of the first celebrated custodians of the rossoneri, later capped for the Italy national team.

RAI television arrives and the Gre-No-Li Milan enters the screen

RAI television arrives and the Gre-No-Li Milan enters the screen

When RAI began its official television service on 3 January 1954, Italian football — and the great Milan of Gunnar Nordahl, Gunnar Gren and Nils Liedholm — gained a new, flickering black-and-white window into homes and bars across the peninsula. Sets were scarce and gathering crowds formed around a single television in the local osteria, so early images of the Swedish-inflected Milan were a communal ritual rather than a private one. This first televisual era coexisted with radio, which still ruled for live match description, but it planted the seed of Milan as a nationally visible spectacle.

The Rizzoli Era Begins: Trabattoni Hands Milan to Andrea Rizzoli

In April 1954 Umberto Trabattoni — the president who had steered Milan through the war years and whose stewardship brought the Gre-No-Li trio to the club (Gunnar Nordahl in January 1949, Gunnar Gren and Nils Liedholm later that year) — handed the presidency to Andrea Rizzoli, heir to the Milanese publishing dynasty built by his father Angelo, the orphanage boy who rose to command a printing, magazine and cinema empire. Andrea brought the family's wealth and glamour to the club and presided over its first golden age of the modern era: four scudetti, the signings of Schiaffino and the young Rivera, and — in his final season, 1962-63 — the first European Cup, lifted at Wembley. The publishing fortune stayed in the background; the football history it financed did not. When Rizzoli stepped down in 1963, Milan had been transformed from a strong domestic club into a continental power.

1953-54: Guttmann arrives, Inter retain

Béla Guttmann's first season ended with Inter retaining the title and Milan again in the chasing pack, finishing third. Nordahl won yet another capocannoniere crown with 23 goals, and the summer that followed brought Uruguayan playmaker Juan Alberto Schiaffino from Peñarol for a world-record fee — the final piece of a new championship side.

Schiaffino Arrives - a World-Record Signing

Schiaffino Arrives - a World-Record Signing

In the summer of 1954, straight after the World Cup, the world transfer record fell: record to prise Juan Alberto 'Pepe' Schiaffino from Penarol, the Uruguayan maestro who had orchestrated the Maracanazo that silenced Brazil at the 1950 World Cup. A playmaker of exquisite balance and vision, Schiaffino wove his artistry alongside Nordahl and Liedholm, going on to make 171 appearances and score 60 goals for the Rossoneri. His arrival added silken craft to the muscular attack of Nordahl and Liedholm and underwrote the titles still to come.
