From Cricket Club to Milan Football Club

Born in 1899 as the Milan Foot-Ball and Cricket Club, an English institution shaped by Herbert Kilpin and first president Alfred Edwards, the club steadily shed its Victorian skin as football swallowed cricket whole. In 1919 it was reborn as Milan Football Club, the willow and stumps set aside for good. Even when Mussolini's regime later imposed the Italianised 'Associazione Calcio Milano,' the Anglo spelling 'Milan' was restored after the war, a stubborn badge of the club's English roots that survives on the crest to this day.

Wartime suspension 1915-1919

1915-1919: War stops the championship

With Italy's entry into the Great War in May 1915 the national championship was suspended for four years, the abandoned 1914-15 tournament eventually awarded to Genoa after the war. Milan kept football alive in regional wartime competitions, claiming the Coppa Federale in 1916 and adding Lombard wartime trophies such as the Coppa Mauro and Coppa Lombardia in the following seasons, none of which count as official titles. Like every Italian club, Milan sent players and members to the front, and the rossoneri emerged from the war into a transformed footballing landscape.

Gianni Brera is born in San Zenone al Po

On 8 September 1919 in San Zenone al Po, a farming village on the left bank of the Po in the Pavese lowlands of Lombardy, Giovanni Luigi "Gianni" Brera was born into a family of modest means — the man who would become Italy's greatest *calcio* (football) writer. He later signed himself with the self-mocking pen name *Gioannbrerafucarlo*, a run-together of "Gioann Brera fu Carlo" (dialect and old registry usage for "Giovanni Brera, son of the late Carlo"), and forged an entire literary language for football. His bond with Milan the city and Milan the club, half in love and half in quarrel, ran through *La Gazzetta dello Sport* and *Il Giorno* for four decades.
