1913–14 season

Louis Van Hege and the Silver Boot

The Belgian inside-forward Louis Van Hege was the great goalscorer of Milan's pre-war years. Quick and clinical, he plundered 21 goals in 17 matches during the 1913–14 Prima Categoria championship and claimed the Scarpa d'Argento as the league's finest marksman. Across five seasons in rossonero (1910–1915) he struck 97 goals and captained the side, keeping the Rossoneri competitive on the pitch even as silverware stayed stubbornly out of reach — his prolific spell is one of the few bright threads woven through Milan's long post-1907 wilderness. The Great War would soon cut his Milan story cruelly short.

1913-14: Casale's year, Milan adrift

The 1913-14 championship produced one of Italian football's great surprises, the provincial club Casale sweeping to the title, while Milan's challenge again faded well short of the finish. Van Hege remained the side's talisman in front of goal, but the rossoneri were now firmly a mid-tier force in the northern game.
